February Speaker: Kristie Mooney

Kristie Mooney resides in Portland, Oregon. She teaches Workshops though out the Pacific Northwest and is best known for her Watercolor Batiks on Rice Paper.

When asked to describe her process, she explains: “To create a Batik on rice paper I combine many colors, layer by layer and watch it mingle through the fibers of the rice paper. The wax is applied to each layer and once I achieve the intensity of the color I’m looking for the entire painting is covered in wax. Next, I carefully crinkle the wax and rice paper and run dyes through the cracks. I then remove all the wax from the painting. Every piece is unique.”

Batik Techniques with Kristie Mooney
Our February program presenter, Kristie Mooney, is offering to give a workshop to local artists in October. The focus of this 3-day workshop will be watercolor batik on rice paper (attachment above is from the workshop presented to Oregon Society of Artists in Portland last year). She will be talking about her process at the upcoming CAG meeting Feb. 3. She is willing to offer this workshop for a total of $1500 plus the room fee, for a maximum of 15 artists. If we decide soon that we could offer this workshop, there is a possibility that we could apply for up to $500 in assistance from the Watercolor Society of Oregon if we have at least two WSO members attending (Karen Kreamer will be one of these). It sounds very reasonable, especially since she usually charges $300 per participant for her workshops. Karen Kreamer will also inform the Multimedia Critique Group, which is WSO-sponsored. Stay tuned for more information!

Beginning Watercolor Workshop in March with Donna Beverly

Donna will be offering a one-day watercolor exploration workshop in March, on Saturday, March 14 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Non-artists are welcome. Never drawn or painted before? You do not need to know how to draw.  This is about your exploring what watercolor can do, learning how to mix your own colors and having fun learning the basics of painting on paper while using quality materials which are all supplied for you.
Your total cost is $145 (which includes all needed supplies at a value of $45):  8 hues of professional grade watercolors, two mixing palettes, a variety of watercolor papers, sponge brushes and Raphael professional watercolor “mop” brush (a $20 value).
You will focus on watercolor techniques:  glazes, gradation washes, splash and splatter textures, dissolved edges,  resists, and how to mix your own individual colors.
Not a beginner?  Intermediate painters will benefit from learning about the double primary color system while you create paintings that convey strong design principles and explore experimental painting surfaces.
The workshop is limited to 8 participants.  You will receive plenty of personal guidance within the small group.
How to register:
  1. Please send me your email to me at with subject line:  watercolor workshop
  2. I will confirm your enrollment by email.
  3. You will receive location information and confirmation of enrollment by email once payment is received (Sorry, I do not accept credit cards in an attempt to keep the prices lower).A minimum of four participants is needed for the workshop.
I look forward to sharing the joy of watercolor with you. Still have questions or concerns? Email me at
ABCs of Abstract Art

A workshop by artist, Ruth Armitage, called the ABC’s of Abstract Art, will be offered at the Brownsville Art Center in March. Ruth is not only a well-known accomplished award winning artist but also a very competent teacher. More information about her is available at Click here to view the  registration form. BAA was able to subsidize the $350 fee for the 3 days at $245. The class will be held in the Community Room upstairs above the Art Center, 255 Main St., Brownsville, OR, on March 19, 20, and 21.

Tiny Art Show

The call to artists is open for the upcoming Tiny Art Show. The Tiny Art Show accompanies the Ten Tiny Dances® performance. For the dance performance, choreographers of different genres compact the expansiveness of dance to fit a stage that is only 4 feet x 4 feet x 1.5 feet high. For the Tiny Art Show, artists of different mediums create small art (4 inches x 4 inches x [no more than] 1 ½ inches) to fill a large 4 feet x 4 feet board. When complete, the board will be covered with 100 tiny art works. It’s a joy to behold.

All the art is available the nights of the dance performance for $10. However, since all proceeds benefit a local charity, most people pay considerably more. As an artist you are donating your art for a cause, and you’re making original art affordable for many people.
