GENERAL SCHOOL NEWS

Staffing Update from Superintendent Polito

We are fully staffed for the 2018-19 school year. The only changes to our elementary school teacher staffing are as follows:

  • One more Kindergarten class,
    taught by Nessa Hessami

  • One less 1st grade class, two classes taught by Kathy McAdams and Jennifer Lighty

  • 2nd grade team will be Debbie Faleschini, Linette Griffith and Lindsay Pierce

  • Brian Myrtetus will be a full-time roving substitute

The Middle School welcomes Amy Borges who will teach English and Social Studies. Amy comes to us from South San Francisco Unified School District where she has taught MS English for five years. We also welcome Jonathon Schneider who will teach Social Studies. Jonathon is finishing his student teaching at Carlmont High School. He completed his first phase of student teaching at Crocker Middle School in Hillsborough.

Next Wednesday Line-Up

This Wed., April 25; 8:25am; blacktop
Our next line-up is this Wednesday. Parents will have an opportunity to join in celebrating our students who have earned Paws of Praise and learn about any upcoming school activities.

Problems of the Month
WES has engaged school-wide Problems of the Month, which are non-routine math problems designed to promote a problem-solving theme at schools. Each problem is divided into five levels of difficulty, Level A (primary) through Level E (high school), to allow access and scaffolding for students into different aspects of the problem and stretch students to go deeper into mathematical complexity. The problems were developed by the Silicon Valley Mathematics Initiative and are aligned to the Common Core Standards. We will post our TK-8th grade students work at Open House on May 10th.

CAASPP (California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress)
CAASPP is starting next month, schedule below:

  • Grades 3 & 4: May 1-10
  • Grade 5: May 14-18;
    Science May 24 & 25

Our teachers are trained and ready to administer CAASPP. If you have any questions about testing, please contact your child’s classroom teacher

Helpful reminders for day of testing:

  • Ensure your child eats a good breakfast — students perform better when they aren’t hungry.
  • Help your child get enough sleep — children ages 7-12 need 10 to 12 hours of sleep.
  • Dress in comfortable clothing.
  • Make appointments around our testing schedule and please be on time each morning.
