Opening Reception: Saturday, May 6th 1–5pm

Suzanne Allen’s first solo show at Lawrence Street Gallery, “Re-Creation”, is based on upcycled art, collage, assemblage, altered books, and reinvented artworks. States Suzanne "Creation continues my process of incorporating fragments and pieces of nature and history, such as leaves, shells, feathers, seeds, flowers and photos, textiles, advertising illustrations, maps, postcards, magazine or newspaper copy, and writing/text." She reuses and compiles these ordinary fragments through composition, texture and color to create new patterns from old pieces. By focusing on the small pieces of a larger whole, this show explores both the beauty of nature and the complexity of history. In her current show Allen included some of the items collected over the years, such as vintage kitchenware, old children's books and her father’s cherished Mercedes grill. "These re-creations surprised me, as I hope they surprise the viewer," says Allen.

After over thirty years of teaching college English–literature, writing, and women's studies–she retired and started to learn about and play with art. She took classes at Marygrove College; Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center, with Duke Potts, Les Johnson, and Charles McGee but mainly with Laura Whitesides-Host. Other classes included Pewabic pottery, Roycroft Studios as well as workshops from Robert Burridge, Candace Law, Elizabeth St. Hillaire and Jacqueline Sullivan. At Lawrence Street Gallery in Ferndale, she has exhibited at three two-woman shows: “Our Mothers Worlds”, “Play Is The Thing” and the newest, “Exploring New Worlds”. She participated in several group shows. Her work has appeared innumerous juried shows around metropolitan Detroit including the Scarab Club, Swords Into Plowshares Peace Center and Gallery, The Majestic Café, the Community House in Birmingham, the Northville Art House, the Huron Valley Art Center, the Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center, and the Downriver Center for Arts and Culture, where she was awarded Best of Show. Most recently she has shown work at the Grosse Pointe War Memorial, First Merchants Bank in Ferndale, Kayrod Gallery in Detroit, and the tribute to Charles McGee in Detroit. See this show for yourself. You will come away amazed at the vision of this artist in recreating what we thought we knew into spectacular art forms! Samples of just a few of her pieces are above and for interviews and more information contact the gallery. Again, Suzanne will be doing an gallery demonstration during her Mid-Month Reception, May 14th from 3 - 4 pm.
