LETTER FROM OUR PRESIDENT

A TIME OF JOY

On Thursday, September 28, 2010, Bishop Kelley graduate Vince Fernandez was ordained a transitional deacon, meaning a deacon on his way to becoming a priest. God willing, he'll be ordained a priest on June 30, 2018. His ordination as a deacon took place at Saint Peter's Basilica in Rome where all seminarians of the Pontifical North American College are ordained. For Vince, for his family, for his parish (Saint Bernard's in south Tulsa), and for our diocese, it is a time of great joy because one of our own has given his life to Christ and the Church.

In mid-September, we were notified that nine of our seniors are being recognized by the National Merit Corporation for their academic achievement. Three seniors are National Merit Semifinalists and six are Commended Scholars. These numbers, along with rising ACT scores, the college acceptances of the Class of 2017, our AP scores, and much more should be a source of pride for this community.

Starting Wednesday night September 27, our fine arts department presented the musical, The Wizard of Oz.  If you didn't see it, I wish you could have. The joy and passion with which our students perform and their teachers instruct are a sight to see. The fine arts at Bishop Kelley continue to flourish!

These are just three of the many beautiful fruits that come from the dedication of our students, their parents, and our faculty and staff. What a privilege it is to see it firsthand. Thank you for all you do to support our students and alumni so that they might live lives of joy!

On a personal note, I'm grateful for your prayers and good wishes following the announcement of my move to Stillwater to become pastor at St. Francis Xavier. I continue to be both excited about the new opportunity and melancholy about leaving our wonderful school. Be assured though, that I am still very much on the job here and looking forward to the months ahead helping Bishop Kelley continue to grow and improve.

Please pray for us every day!

In Christ,

Rev. Brian O'Brien
President

MESSAGE FROM THE SCHOOL NURSE

On Wednesday, October 25, from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Occupational Health, Inc. will be at Bishop Kelley in the Library Meeting Room to administer the flu vaccine to the Bishop Kelley students and parents.  As you know, people are most susceptible to contracting the flu when confined in spaces with a large number of people.  Getting an annual flu vaccine is the first and best way to protect yourself and your family from the flu.

The Quadrivalent Flu shot (protects against 4 strains of flu) will be available and costs $35.  FluMist was not recommended by the CDC for distribution in the United States again this year because of poor effectiveness.  Unfortunately that means it will not be available.

Every student being vaccinated must have a consent form filled out and signed before receiving the vaccine.  In addition to the signed consent form, students will need to have a check made payable to OHI or cash in the amount of $35 for the Quadrivalent Shot.  Credit and Debit cards will also be accepted.  If sending cash, please put in an envelope with the signed consent form with your student’s name clearly marked on the outside.

The consent form and payment must be returned to school by Wednesday, October 25.  Parents and grandparents are welcome to come and get the flu vaccine as well. Occupational Health is only able to file your insurance if it is Community Care.  The nurse will be able to provide a receipt /proof of flu shot for you to turn in to all other insurance companies.  Please make sure to ask for this at the time of service.

If you have additional questions, please contact Tierney Dower, RN, School Nurse, at 918-627-3390 ext 113, or by email at tdower@bishopkelley.org.  Thank you for your help in keeping our community healthy this winter.
