So it begins...

It's that time of year when excitement and nervousness begin to creep in. We're just two weeks away from the start of the 2017-18 school year at Bishop Kelley High School and I am firmly in the excitement camp!

The start of the school year brings new students (21 transfer students and our largest freshman class ever), new personnel (Jim Franz--our new principal, and several teachers), new ideas (Chromebooks for every student) and also the opportunity to live out the decades-long traditions that make BKHS a great place to be.

Veteran educators like Gary Oberste, Brian Arenson, and Kathy Scribner will be back. Football games, pep rallies, and all-school Mass will, once again, be a big part of the school calendar. For all of the new and old, we know that this year will be unique.

Every year is special because our students are special and unique. They come to school more mature than last year, more spiritually curious than last year, and more academically prepared for college than last year. We have the great challenge to meet them where they are and help them along life's path towards the ultimate goals of college and heaven. Our dedicated faculty and staff will work very hard to make it happen and we ask for your prayers as we begin this endeavor.

In this issue of the Connection, you'll find information on the important beginning of the year activities for parents, students and alumni. Please give it a good look and let us know how we can serve you. Let's have a great start!

In Christ,

Rev. Brian O'Brien

Bishop Kelley teachers redefine "summer school". Many BK students take classes over the summer to get ahead of the game or allow more time for activities during the school year. Ecology, Oklahoma History and other summer course offerings brought students out of the classroom and into our local museums, parks and national monuments.

PTO is proud to be a part of the spirited Bishop Kelley community. We have so many volunteers who share their time and talents with Bishop Kelley and on behalf of PTO, we are thankful for them. PTO will meet the first Tuesday of every other month starting in September. Our first meeting will be September 5th, 2017 at 8:15 a.m. in the Stephenson Family Library Meeting Room. I would like to extend an invitation to all freshman parents to come to our first meeting fifteen minutes early (8:00 am, Tuesday September 5) to help coordinate our freshman parent group — Club 2021. Please mark your calendars for our other meetings — November 7th, 2017, January 9th, 2018, March 6th, 2018 and May 8th, 2018.

Our officers and committee chairs are ready to implement the many activities we have planned for the year! Some of our committee chairs have already been busy. Thank you to our Teacher Activities Committee Chairs Holly Lehman, Laurie Wohlmershauser and Kerri Anthony for welcoming our teachers back to school on their first day with a delicious breakfast. Beginning in September, our Staff Appreciation Committee will serve the teachers lunch once a month. The committee typically prepares the main dish and then asks parents from each class to provide sides, desserts, etc. On September 14th, senior parents will be asked to assist with the luncheon. Please be on the lookout for a Club '18 email asking for volunteers or to send food.

Our Spiritual Development Chair, Janet Pynn, welcomes anyone who would like to volunteer or learn more about Adoration and spend one hour of their time in this centuries-old Eucharistic devotion of prayer. The next Adoration is Friday, September 1st, 2017. If you would like to volunteer, please contact Janet at

Our Moms in Prayer group, also led by Janet Pynn, will be meeting in September. This group will meet in the Chapel Foyer every Wednesday at 1:45 p.m. to pray for our students and staff. All are welcome to come!

We are looking forward to Kidfest (Kid Festival/Carnival) on Friday, September 15th, 2017 from 5:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. The Kelley Krazies will be hosting games for our younger Comets on the football practice field (just north of the Commons). PTO will be selling water, pop, and pizza. If you would like to volunteer, please contact me at Bring your family out to enjoy a fall evening of fun and support the Comet football team.

We will have sign up sheets for all activities at the freshman parent orientation and back to school night and would be happy to have help with the committees or for a single event. We look forward to welcoming the incoming freshman families and new transfer students.

Once a Comet, always a Comet!

Father Duy Nguyen and Father David Webb were ordained on May 27th at Holy Family Cathedral in Tulsa. They will be joining Father Bryan Ketterer as chaplains of our campus. Welcome to Bishop Kelley!

The 2016-2017 Believe in Kelley Annual Fund was 9% short of its record $500,000 goal. Nevertheless, the $455,200 gifted surpassed all previous BiK totals. Approximately 620 current parents, alumni, alumni parents, grandparents, faculty, and other friends of BK gave to the ’16-’17 annual fund for the benefit of the school’s more than 900 students enrolled for the upcoming school year. Individual gifts ranged from $25 to $10,000.

The gifts received from this annual fund were used to purchase sound systems and furniture for our students. Additionally, funds will go toward tuition assistance.

Thank you to everyone who gave to our annual fund! Without the generous gifts of our donors, we would not be able to support our students and improve our campus.

The class of 2017 senior class legacy gift was blessed by Father O'Brien on July 27th, with several '17 alumni in attendance. It was wonderful to see our recent grads before many of them head off to college in a few weeks! Thank you to those seniors who made gifts & pledges to this project.

Class of 2018, be on the lookout for future messages about planning
your own senior class legacy gift!
