The Example of Pete Theban

The month of November is traditionally set aside to pray for those who have died. This is especially true on November 2, the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed, commonly known as All Souls Day. On Monday, Oct. 17, 2016, Marquette Catholic School Principal Pete Theban died after a short battle with pancreatic cancer. He was a personal mentor to Father Brian O'Brien. Last Thursday, the day of Pete's funeral, Fr. O'Brien penned this reflection about Pete and his life.

Pete Theban is a hero of mine. The list also includes the likes of St. John Paul II, St. Damien of Molokai, my parents and my grandmother. He wouldn’t like being included on such a list. He was humble. He was quick to deflect praise and put it on to others but nevertheless he makes my list of heroes.

I first met Pete when I arrived at Christ the King Catholic Church and Marquette School in the summer of 2007. I was assigned there in my first pastoral assignment as a newly ordained priest. I was glad to be at the parish and was especially excited about being being a part of Marquette School, a place I had long admired for its academic reputation and its fidelity to the Catholic faith. That summer, I met Pete. I didn’t know that I would soon lead a Catholic school but I had a hint that at some point in the future I might be a pastor at a parish with a school, so I watched. I watched Pete. I watched the way he interacted with people. I watched the way he spoke with students and parents. I watched what he did in the morning as the kids came into school. I watched how he interacted in meetings. I watched and I learned. A lot.

When I learned from Pete can be summarized in three words: Prayer. Kindness. People.

Pete was a man of prayer. He prayed alone and he prayed with others. He prayed for wisdom on big decisions to be made and he prayed for the intentions of others. He had a weekly Holy Hour before the Blessed Sacrament. He led the school in prayer on many mornings. He was a man of prayer and he taught me to rely less on myself and more on the Lord.

Pete was a man of kindness - Great kindness. Each morning he would stand outside the school and greet students and parents as they came in. He had an umbrella when it rained so the students wouldn’t get wet. He would stand and answer the questions of parents and grandparents. He was always so patient. His kindness extended to those going through a tough time. Pete went to a lot of funerals. Whether at funerals of former students, the parent or grandparent of a student, you name it, and chances were that Pete was there. I remember driving to Cleveland, OK (about a 45 minute drive) for the funeral of the father of a Marquette student. I thought to myself, “I’ll probably be the only person from Marquette there.” Wrong. Pete was there. I remember going to the funeral of the grandfather of a Bishop Kelley student. This student was three years removed from Marquette. It was a small funeral with the family, a few close friends, and Pete. That kind of kindness is all too uncommon in our world today. Pete taught me to be kind to people because we never know what they are going through.

Pete was a man of the people. He always seemed to be energized by people. This was especially true of his students.  Whether a kindergarten student or an 8th grader, whether a recent former student or an alumnus from 20 years ago, Pete drew strength from his students. I always admired that. In addition to loving students, Pete loved his teachers. I’ve never seen a school leader who was as beloved by his teachers as Pete. He was incredibly loyal to them. He listened to and was attentive to their needs. His teachers loved him back.

Pete was a family man. He loved his wife and children. I imagine there were sacrifices along the way to be at school early or to stay late for a parent meeting or to go to all those funerals, but in my conversations with Pete, at no time was his smile as big or his words as proud as when he spoke of Anita, Abbey and Nick. I always admired his dedication to his family and his example is one many fathers would do well to emulate.

Prayer. Kindness. People. For me, those define Pete Theban. He loved his life. He loved his job. His loved his family. He loved the Lord. And the best part of it all is that he still does. Rest in peace dear friend. Thank you for your example.

New Director of Alumni Relations is '09 grad, Spirit Squad assistant

Katherine Devonshire '09 had always wanted to move back to Tulsa, so 18 months ago she took a full-time position at Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Oklahoma. She also joined the BK Spirit Squad coaching staff with the goal of working at Bishop Kelley full time.   

On November 1, she begins her new role as Director of Alumni Relations at Bishop Kelley. She takes over for Megan Schaunaman Neely '01 who is "retiring" for now as she raises a family. Megan will continue to teach ACT and PSAT Prep classes at BK.

Katherine earned her BA in Human Development and Children and Family Services from OSU. Before returning to Tulsa, she interned at JD McCarty Center in Norman and worked with children with disabilities.  

"I am so excited to be coming back to BK," Katherine said. "It's great to see some of same teachers I had. The community environment is even better than when I was in school."

Katherine says she is excited to meet all of the current students "because getting to know them now will help build relationships so that when students graduate, they will more likely come back to events and support the school in various ways.”

Katherine is willing to "think outside the box" by creating both big and small events for alumni to experience.

"I hope to make alumni events bigger by reaching out to even more alumni and I look forward to getting to know the current students at BK," Katherine says. "My first goal is to get to know all of the classes and build relations now, so in the future we will still have that connection.”

Speech and Debate hosts Father-Daughter Dance; prepares for Nov. 11-12 event

Speech and Debate Team is hosting its 2nd Annual Father-Daughter Holiday Ball from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 10, in the Activity Center Cafeteria at Bishop Kelley High School. Entry fee is $20 per couple and includes a complimentary picture. ($5 for each additional daughter.)  Pre-school through 8th grade. Questions? Email Erin Clark 

Bishop Kelley’s Speech, Drama and Debate program is among the best in Oklahoma and its teams have won 10 State Titles, 20 straight Regional Tournaments, and five Academic State Champion awards (highest GPA). 

Speech and Debate students will compete this school year for the first time at Booker T. Washington High School on Nov. 4-5. Bishop Kelley will host its annual speech and debate invitational on November 11-12. Volunteer judges are needed, so please email Erin Clark
Speech and Debate will host a judges training workshop from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., Nov. 3 in the S-building.
 Pre-Health Club students visit TU and Oxley College of Health and Sciences

Pre-Health Careers Club students toured the campus at the University of Tulsa and Oxley College of Health Sciences Building on Oct. 13.

The 15 students learned about the health programs offered at TU and enjoyed seeing the TU campus, while getting hands-on practice listening to heart sounds and heartbeats with the mannequins at the new Oxley Health Science Center.

Elisha Thach - September Teacher of the Month

Spanish teacher Elisha Thach is in her second year at BK and was “pleasantly surprised” being named Teacher of the Month in September. She teaches Spanish I and II and Honors Spanish III.  She says she enjoys the challenges of teaching at BK.

“I push myself to be more rigorous and challenge the students,” she said. “They are getting smarter and getting a great education.”

Thach taught Spanish for 10 years at Broken Arrow before coming to BK. She has education degrees in Spanish, French and ESL from Northeastern State University. She is a Senior Supper co-sponsor, National Honor Society Club induction ceremony sponsor and Spanish Club sponsor.

“I enjoy every class because different students make the environment interesting," she says. "Students here are ready and eager and bring in their own world views and background knowledge. We have students with previous exposure to other countries, language and cultures.”

In May 2017, Thach plans to accompany eight students to Spain, her fifth such trip. She fondly recalls taking students to Spain during the excitement of the European Cup Soccer Championship. She and her group could not find a public place to watch a match due to the popularity of the sport, so they went back to their hotel and watched.

Thach has traveled to France, Italy, Austria, England and Canada. Many BK students have already signed up for a 2018 trip, she said. Thach would like to see more students - there are now 15 - taking AP Spanish “because speaking the language will continue to be a necessity.”

Students will upload a photo and provide their gender when they register.  Photo and gender will be printed on all rosters, tickets, and score reports.

Government issued ID (driver’s license, passport), school ID card with photo, school letter with photo, or notarized statement with photo are acceptable.  Please note: personal recognition or photos from yearbooks are no longer acceptable.
Students must bring BOTH an acceptable photo ID and a paper copy of their admission ticket.  Names on roster and photo ID must match.  Students not listed on roster will not be admitted.
You can no longer just show up at the center to test.  You will be required to complete a standby testing request online in advance of testing and must print a standby ticket. This same procedure applies to students wanting to change tests and test centers. 

Annual Grandparent-Student Dance and Grandparents Day are Nov. 16-17

Bishop Kelley grandparents will be welcomed to school for the Sixth Annual Grandparent/Student Dance on Wednesday, November 16, 2016, followed by our 22nd Annual Grandparents' Day Prayer Services on Thursday, November 17, 2016.

San Miguel and St. Joseph Catholic School students visited BK in October

Eighth grade visits are important to future students at Bishop Kelley. The tours and information students receive can help them realize how they may fit in if they choose to become a freshman at BK. Bishop Kelley's adopted school, San Miguel (students shown above), visited campus recently.

Service hours to be imported at end of Second Quarter

Parents and students should be aware that the First Quarter Report Card does not reflect current Service Hour accumulation. At the end of the quarter, there were a significant number of hours still awaiting approval, so BK chose to wait to import the hours from service accounts to Report Cards. All hours will be imported at the end of the Second Quarter. For an accurate count of hours for this year, please refer to your student's account. Any questions may be directed to Jerri Berna at

 Library News: Book Swap, Book Club, Book Fair and volunteers needed
Book Swap is new to the library this year, so students should visit and take a book to read and donate a book they have finished. The cart is inside the library doors.

The Christmas Family Book Fair is back! The book fair will be 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Nov. 28-Dec. 2 in the library.
A percentage of the proceeds will go to the Catholic Charities children’s library. Book Fair customers are welcome to purchase children's books and donate them, as well as donate loose change which will allow them to enter a drawing for a Starbucks gift card.

Read about how Fr. Brian O'Brien blessed a statue of St. Teresa of Calcutta at Catholic Charities. BK Junior Turner Snapp completed that project as part of his Boy Scout troop 173 from the Church of St. Mary.

New Auction Room made possible by donors 

Bishop Kelley’s Auction is, in essence, a gala…..a time to celebrate the great things done for and on behalf of our students each and every day, all while having a great time in an enjoyable environment.
As you can imagine, Auction doesn’t come together in a week or a month; rather, it requires careful planning, lots of committee meetings, and implementation of many tasks on behalf of the Auction Committee over nine months.

If you’ve ever been in the old Auction work room, you know it wasn’t large enough to accommodate five volunteers. Today, Bishop Kelley boasts a new Auction work room, about 35’ X 25’, located at the east entrance to the gymnasiums, carved out of what was once BK’s wrestling room. This space was made possible thanks to donors who funded the wonderful new John H. Smith Wrestling Room and Liz Ritchie Cheer Gym completed in March.

The 37th Annual Bishop Kelley Auction will take place on the Bishop Kelley Campus, Saturday, April 22, 2017.  The Annual Auction is one of BK’s two major fundraisers each year and is a wonderful gathering of the BK Community.  The 2017 Auction theme is “Kelleywood – Lights, Camera, Auction” and promises to be a stunning red-carpet affair.

The Auction Committee typically processes donations of over 400 items, gift certificates, services, experiences, etc., generously given by our current parents, alumni, alumni parents, and grandparents.  The items collected and the dedicated volunteers who catalogue and prepare these items for sale now have a comfortable, attractive work space that’s dedicated solely to Auction year around. 
The new work room features three computer workstations to be used to enter donations into the auction software.  The Auction workroom will also serve as a pick-up center for BKbay, the online portion of the Auction each April.

We are so pleased to have a comfortable space for our volunteers to work in.  Thank you to the wonderful Auction volunteers. 
Academic Bowl team undefeated

 Academic Bowl team has four returning Varsity players including Josh Gottes, Devin Raine (captain), Junior Angela Brown and Joseph Mellor.

The BK Academic Bowl team is undefeated this year. OSSAA competitions start in January followed by the State Tournament in February. 

The team's ultimate goal is to return to national tournament for its fourth year.

The team goal is to win the Eastern Oklahoma Academic Conference (EOAC). State competition begins with District Seeding, then Area competition on Jan. 14, followed by State on Feb. 4, 2017.

That tournaments sets the brackets for Area in January - which combines 2 Districts. The Brackets are not generally posted until about 2-3 weeks prior to the tournament. If BK places 1st or 2nd at Area, the team will advance to State in February.

San Miguel School's Dancing with the Stars on Nov. 5 features BK parent Steve Allen and Mary Dill '09 as seen in Tulsa Lifestyle Magazine and Oklahoma magazine.

Steve Ross '85, was featured for his work with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in this recent magazine article highlighting his accomplishments in Europe.

Tulsa Mayors Youth Council features three BK students - Marcus Lyons '17, Lauren Bush '18, and Zack Lissau '17. Lauren Bush spoke to the Tulsa World  about being on the Mayor's Youth Council. NewsOn6 covered an event, when Marcus Lyons spoke about his experience. This year is the first that private school students have been invited to participate on the Mayor's Youth Council, which includes 18 area teens. 

Courtney McCorkle '15 has won the blue ribbon at three of the four shows she competed in on the High Point University Equestrian Team, which last month hosted the Intercollegiate Horse Shows Association event.

Rumble in the Jungle at Annual Trivia Night, Jan. 21

Bishop Kelley High School’s Annual Trivia Night is Saturday, January 21, 2017.  “Rumble in the Jungle” is being hosted by the BK Class of ’92. We will have 1,420 players and need 100 energetic volunteers.  It’s a fun and fast-paced evening for volunteers. 

Volunteers work from 5:30 – 10:30 p.m., get a Trivia Night 2017 T-shirt and enjoy a great time with the BK community.

Angelo Prassa Memorial Golf Tournament was a success

Thanks to all the golfers who came out to support BK Prassa Tuition Assistance Endowment and helped raise funds for the BK athletic facilities.  
The 2016 Angelo Prassa Golf Tournament was a success with 76 golfers at Cedar Ridge Country Club and a beautiful day.  

The 2017 Prassa Memorial Golf Tournament will be held Monday, Sept. 11, 2017. Please mark your calendar and plan to support BK students.

Bishop Kelley Auction 2017

Save the date for the 37th Annual Auction, Kelleywood – Lights, Camera, Auction at Bishop Kelley High School on Saturday, April 22, 2017

Join us for a red carpet affair inspired by film, fashion, and fun.  Chaired by Kathy Brainerd and Beth Snapp and a fabulous committee, the evening will include dinner, a live and silent auction, live music, and lots of paparazzi-worthy fun.

The proceeds from the 2017 Auction will be used for tuition assistance and to purchase Google Chromebooks for all current students to use at school and at home. Starting next year, seniors will keep their Chromebooks upon graduating from BK.

Gift Gathering for the BK Auction is taking place now in the classrooms.  The donations made to the Auction through Gift Gathering are the foundation of the Live, Silent, and Online Auction packages that will be auctioned at the April event.  Each year the BK community is so very generous and we thank you so much.  Each donation is appreciated and significant.  Please send your donation by November 10 with your student to their first block class or to the Advancement Office. 
November Boy and Girl of the Month

Triston Middleton

Triston Middleton has played soccer since he was age 3. He has continued playing soccer at BK during his high school years.

Triston enjoys government classes; however his favorite class has been Jamie Alexander’s Psychology class because “what you learn you can apply it in every day scenarios and see how a person is acting in a certain a way and analyze why."

Triston is taking Honors Calculus and plans to attend OU to study law and business. 

“I love the fact this school is open to many ideas and you can talk about politics and have a sophisticated conversation. I appreciate teachers like Mrs. (Mary Jo) Othon who talk to you after class if you need help. The teachers here are always open to helping you with academics outside of class.” - Triston Middleton.

Jessica Gray

Jessica has been involved with Spirit Squad and girls tennis since she was a freshman. She especially enjoys her membership in the Pre-Health Club. 

Her favorite class is AP Biology with Mrs. Gathright and any biology, zoology or science class. She has taken many honors and AP courses in math and science. 

Jessica is considering several institutions of higher learning and she wants to explore a career in biology or become a doctor. She is considering St. Louis University, Washington University at St. Louis, University of Oklahoma and University of Arkansas.

Can't Afford College?  Yes, You Can!

The state of Oklahoma will help pay college tuition through Oklahoma’s Promise.  This program is open to students in the 8th, 9th, and 10th grade whose family income is $50,000 or less and who agree to meet certain academic requirements and conduct standards. The requirements for the Oklahoma’s Promise program are described below:
**Be an Oklahoma resident
**Graduate from an Oklahoma high school
**Take 17 units of high school courses and achieve at least a 2.5 cumulative G.P.A. in those courses (4 English, 3 Lab Science, 3 Math, 3 History and Citizenship, 2 Foreign Language or Computer courses, 1 additional course from those listed, and 1 Fine Art course)
**Achieve a cumulative G.P.A. of at least 2.5 for all courses in grades 9-12
**Achieve at least a 2.5 G.P.A. in the 17 cores courses listed above
**Attend school regularly
**Do your homework
**Stay away from drugs and alcohol
**Don’t commit a crime or a delinquent act
**Apply for other financial aid during your senior year of high school

Shane Muselmann '14 and Nik Scott, '14, are members of the Executive Council for Soonerthon, an OU organization that has raised over $1 million for OU Children's Hospital.

Shane (pictured with a child) is volunteering at Children’s Hospital and will declare an additional major next semester because he wants to go to Med School to help these children.
