Mission Statement

Our aim at DigitalFUTURES is to democratize architectural education by making the best educational ideas available for free to architects and students across the globe, regardless of gender, religion, ethnicity, age or economic standing. Education, we believe, should be a human right, and not a privilege of the wealthy.

January 2022 Highlights

One of the highpoints of 2021 was the launch of our two new language channels, DigitalFUTURES Arabic and DigitalFUTURES Farsi. Indeed our first ever session in Arabic has proved to be our most popular session of all time. This initiative is an expansion of our existing program of events in English and Chinese, and is part of our mission to increase inclusivity, and to promote diversity.

As we enter 2022, we are planning to introduce further sessions in Spanish, Russian and Portuguese. Our first Spanish session, ‘Nuevas Hibridaciones LatinoAmérica:

Desde el Material y el Contexto hacia la Experimentación Digital,’ will take place on 28 January. As a preview to this, we will host an English language session about Latin America on 22 January, entitled “New Hybridities Latin America: From Material and Context to Digital Experimentation.” We are also hosting further sessions in Arabic and Farsi this month.

Our main Saturday sessions will remain in English, and we will continue to host thematic panels, and twice monthly technical tutorials, featuring the latest computational tools for architects and students. On every Sunday from 23 January we are also hosting a continuation of our popular Doctoral Consortium series, ‘The Hitchhiker’s Guide to Artificial Intelligence.’

Another announcement is the Call for Papers for our 2022 DigitalFUTURES Conference, Hybrid Intelligence, the 4th Conference on Computational Design and Robotic Fabrication (CDRF 2022), that will take place on 25-26 June 2022. Please note that the submission deadline for abstracts has been extended to 17 January 2022.

DigitalFUTURES Tutorial: Coding Evolutionary Behaviours with C# (Basics)

15 January 9:00am EST / 3:00pm CET / 10:00pm China

From a traditional anthropocentric perspective, design processes are considered a linear sequence of decisions to obtain singular and defined outputs. But looking outside of human design methods, there are other ways to design. Nature presents us “evolution” as an iterative design process, a creational phenomenon that involves timeframes and transformations. In contrast to the most mainstream design concept, it releases the final output as the primary concern to set specific logics that define behaviours. This tutorial will introduce the basics of coding in the C# plugin for Grasshopper to code simple iterative algorithms through vectorial operations exercises. These will aim to design simple instruction chains that determine agent transformations within a time frame. The tutorial requires pre- installed Rhino-Grasshopper, basic knowledge of grasshopper information management, basic knowledge of concepts in parametric design. Optional: Dendro plugin

The Tutorial will focus on:

- Basics of C# scripting in Grasshopper

- Vectorial operations in tridimensional space

- Updating information through loops

- Interaction between elements in canvas.

DigitalFUTURES Farsi Talk: Context, Interpretation, Design

21 January Friday at 8:00 pm Tehran/ 11:30 am EST / 5:30 pm CET / 22 January 12:30 am China

Over the ages and centuries, Architecture, as one of the symbols of civilization, has evolved and changed with every fluctuation in culture. One of the most controversial parts of the discipline of architecture is addressing the context and interpreting “Architecture” through the design process. In this session, we want to delve into different approaches to converting context parameters to design solutions by exploring various points of view on the design process in the architecture realm. It will be a conversation on architecture between architects and theorists with different approaches to context, interpretation, and design.

DigitalFUTURES Conference 2022 - Hybrid Intelligence

The 4th Conference on Computational Design and Robotic Fabrication (CDRF 2022)

25-26 June 2022

What constitutes the head of the architect is neither its ‘consciousness' nor its ‘idea', but the tertiary retention that enables the heritage of circuits of transindividuation to which it is connected and which precede it as its pre-individual milieu, supersaturated with potentials - which endows it with the power to dream and to realize its dreams.

----Bernard Stiegler, translated by Daniel Ross

The past 30 years has witnessed the myriad ways in which digital technology not only improves the dynamicity of communication between human and machine, but also provides entirely new directions for innovation and creation. In the digitally structured process of architectural design and construction, machines are not limited to visualizations and realizations of the conceived form by architects, but are involved directly in the creation process. The essence of creativity is no longer limited to the mere informational landscape of the human mind. With shared tools, libraries and procedures, it now includes an array of intelligent machines capable of extending human intentions outward, away from the individual, forming a hybrid intelligence. Architecture will become a collective endeavor, in which not only is architectural knowledge collectively produced,
but also design intent can be formed by decentralized networks of creativities. The digital will not be so much about expanding methods of generating and fabricating architectural objects as it is concerned with cultivating a new context of understanding the central nature of design, creativity and even architecture itself.

Call for Papers:

As part of DigitalFUTURES 2022, the 4th International Conference on Computational Design and Robotic Fabrication (CDRF 2022) theme Hybrid Intelligence, is calling for abstract submissions. The focus of the papers include, but not limited to, architecture theories, tools, methods and procedures in: Computation and Formation, Simulation and Optimization, Data Acquisition and Prediction, Perception and Interaction, Materialization and Construction.
