Mission Discovery programme returned to Ayrshire

Mission Discovery, a week-long space school that gave Ayrshire youngsters the opportunity to work alongside NASA leaders, took place from 11-15 June at our Kilmarnock Campus.

Two hundred secondary school pupils worked in teams to design space experiments.

The International Space School Educational Trust’s (ISSET) Mission Discovery programme was won by Team 20 with their experiment:
Microgravity on the effect of phospholipase A2 (venom) on Staphylococcus aureus.

The winning team members were:

Alicia Burns (Irvine Royal Academy)
Megan Denim (Kilmarnock Academy)
Tyler Mitchell (Girvan Academy)
Andy Morrison (Queen Margaret Academy)
Sam Rae (Belmont Academy)
Savannah Scott (St. Matthew’s Academy)

The experiment will now be sent to the International Space Station where it will be tested by NASA astronauts.
Part of the ISSET team working with our students all week was NASA astronaut Steve Bowen! We invited the people of Ayrshire to meet Steve at our Ayr Campus on Wednesday 16 June.
The winning Mission Discovery team were treated to dinner with former First Lady Michelle Obama on 17 July, at the Hunter Foundation's event in Edinburgh.
Thanks to Sir Tom Hunter for donating a table at the event to Ayrshire College!

 Dean Castle Country Park
Access to Land and Tree, NQ Garden and Landscaping, NPTC Tree Surgery, and City and Guilds Bricklaying students have enjoyed a fantastic year at their Dean Castle Country Park base.

The groups have been hard at work on a number of projects, with Tree Surgery students cutting down designated trees and snedding them. The group also put up new fences and maintained existing fences around the park.

The students on the City and Guilds course have put down a new path near Dean Castle, and a set of steps to take visitors into other areas of the park without having to climb up any muddy embankments.

Access to Land and Tree students were also kept busy, with projects ranging from path maintenance to sowing grass seed, developing borders and hedge planting. Garden and Landscaping students have been planting borders, developing the kitchen garden, propagating plants and growing them on for use in the park.
