The Scottish Leaders Forum

Colleagues may be aware that there has been some re-development of the Scottish Leaders Forum (SLF) over recent months, seeking to very actively draw in the views and perspectives of SLF members as a programme of activity for the year ahead is established. A new Strategic Leadership Group for the SLF has been formed and is meeting monthly to develop plans together that will hopefully enable the SLF to thrive, with the National Performance Framework (NPF) at its core. It is likely that the next major event for the SLF will take place on 3 June 2019, with a strong focus upon the NPF and what we need to do together across public services to make it a reality.

Meantime there has also been some significant re-development work of Workforce Scotland, building from the series of engagement events we held last year. We now have a new Strategic Steering Group for Workforce Scotland, connecting directly with the SLF and seeking to draw in knowledge, enthusiasm, experience and new perspectives from across our public services to steer Workforce Scotland towards its ambitious future.
We also now have a very active group of Workforce Scotland Collaboration and Transformation Partners who are meeting monthly to work together on a forward programme of Workforce Scotland events.  Conversations so far have focussed on the ways in which we can directly support the NPF, incorporating a focus on organisational cultures and collective leadership, a Hosting and Facilitation development programme and creating new strategic partnerships to help to develop our work. More information will follow shortly. Meantime, if anyone would be interested in becoming one of our Collaboration and Transformation Partners, you can find more information here.

"We need leaders who put service over self, stand steadfast in crises and failures, and who display unshakable faith that people can be generous, creative, and kind." (Margaret Wheatley)

We are currently working with Margaret Wheatley to seek to bring her back to Scotland to host some leadership development opportunities in 2019/20. We are still working on the details of the programme but if you would like to be kept updated with developments, please make sure you complete this short form.

Margaret writes, speaks and teaches globally about how we can accomplish our work, sustain our relationships and willingly step forward to serve in this troubled time. She has been working actively out in the world since 1966 and is the author of nine books, most recently “Who do we choose to be?” Find out more about Margaret at her website.

This month we are pleased to announce our newest publications.

Collective Leadership Year 1 Report

The Workforce Scotland offer on Collective Leadership for Scotland was launched at the SLF in January 2018, so we have created a brief report which summarises what has been happening with the programme over our first year.  You can find a link to the report here. Please feel free to circulate this more widely to colleagues who may be interested. We would welcome any feedback on the report and anyone who would like to find out more about this work may wish to sign up for one of our Taster Sessions, noted in the events section below.

Building Our Connections
At this exciting point in our development, we would really welcome any thoughts or suggestions from our Workforce Scotland network on how best we can stay connected and how we can make sure that our communications and development opportunities are reaching more widely across our various organisations and sectors.  It would be great to hear of any new ways that we can work on together to continue to build our networks and ensure we are widely sharing information on development opportunities.

Writing Sprint
Last month, a small group of our facilitators came together, hosted by the Edinburgh Futures Institute, for three days only (hence the “sprint”) to write on what we are learning about Collective Leadership.  The theme that emerged was “The Power in Beginnings”. While the pieces in the document are linked by this theme, it is written as a series of articles you can dip into so take a look at the finished article here.
Dates are now in the diary for networking events and workshops for the rest of the year. Venues and topics are still to be finalised, but you can view the dates and hold them in your diary by visiting our eventbrite page.
