Dialogue and Emotion
1 September 2015 - Glasgow

The next masterclass from the Dialogue Community of Practice will be held on 1 September 2015, at the City Chambers in Glasgow. The masterclass will be lead by Anne Dickson, and will focus on using Dialogue around Emotion, Trust and Resilience.
The Dialogue and Emotion masterclass will identify the obstacles to clear emotional communication, including how we recognise and identify our emotional responses, how we express our feelings and how we blame others for causing our negative feelings.

The masterclass will also look into how we can over come these obstacles, and incorporate emotion into every day conversations; how to register what we are feeling with more accuracy and more rapidity and how to inform others of what we feel about without blame so that communication can be greatly enhanced.

The day will be a blend of the theoretical and the experiential, with participants given the opportunity to put the skills into practice and experience the effects first hand.

Reflections on Dialogue and Deliberation
May 2015 Community of Practice
On the 21 of May the Dialogue Community of Practice met in Stirling to hear from Wendy Faulkner on Dialogue and Deliberation. Tricia Boyle, Head of OD, NHS Fife, shares her reflections below.
"     It was a treat to listen to Wendy Faulkner talk about Dialogue and Deliberation. She made me smile with recognition when she said that she and her colleague Oliver Escobar had been interested in Public engagement since they were student rebels.

"     I seem to have taken a similar journey though inspired before my student days while attempting constructive conversation at home, in the middle of a large group of argumentative siblings. Our similarity in evolution reminded me of that series of jokes about old ... who never die... they just ... away. It occurred to me that our stories indicated that  old rebels never die, they just find new ways to work on issues.
 
"     Recently this has taken Wendy towards really interesting work for the Scottish Government exploring contentious issues using stakeholder and citizen engagement. She described running citizen juries and assemblies on the use of wind farms in Scotland and on stem cell research.

"     She explained how people become more aware of the complexities of issues through being involved and are able to learn through dialogue (divergent thinking) and deliberation (convergent decision making) processes. A common by product of involvement is people deciding that they want to become more involved in their communities and with other contentious issues.  This seems to me to be a great result, increased confidence and ongoing contribution is well worth having personally and in a community.
"     My work as Head of Organisational Development in NHS Fife involves a great deal of Dialogue and deliberation too. At  the moment we are designing and assisting the facilitation of 60 organisations who want to participate with the statutory NHS and Social Services to create a new approach to public participation and engagement for the future integrated health and social care services.

"     We are at the stage where proposals are nearly ready for even wider review and it seems possible that there will be a move away from the previous representative model to something more engaging of many more people. The conversation is in process and not yet complete and none the less, I thought you might like to see a couple of the groups ideas captured and illustrated (by James Baylay)."

How can I get involved?
The Dialogue Community of Practice offers a range of development opportunities and interventions to help you learn about how to use Dialogue effectively. The Dialogue Community of Practice provides space and structure for people in public services to learn about using dialogue both to address complex organisational problems and to support them, their workforce and their communities around the day to day work they are engaged in.

Masterclasses
 
The Dialogue Community of Practice offers four masterclasses a year, where we hear from experienced practitioners on dialogue and themes the Community wished to learn more about, such as Public Engagement and Dialogic Principles. The masterclasses include input from experts and academics, and also allow the community to spend time in dialogue about the learning and how they might apply the learning in their context.

Dialogue Practice Development  Groups

The Dialogue Community of Practice offers Practice groups, a chance for community members to come together and practice dialogue in a safe, facilitated environment. We offer a Beginners Group so people can learn about the underpinning theory and learn to spot patterns in conversation and their own contribution. We also offer an Experienced Group where people have been working with dialogue can deepen their practice.  This is a generative dialogue on the work based issues people bring.
 
If you are interested in joining a practice group, please register your interest here before the end of July 2015.
 
Consultancy
 
We have a number of people who can work with teams to enhance their team working or facilitate a dialogue for a team/system. We can also offer tailored practice groups around a particular theme or work area. Recently, we have supported a practice group of OD and learning professionals across Lothian to develop their skills to support the integration of health and  social care serves. Resources
 
We have a number of resources, including videos, newsletters, articles, and materials from Masterclasses available on both the Workforce Scotland website and on the Knowledge Hub. Members of the Knowledge Hub group can also contribute to threads and discussions on the forums. We also are creating a series of digital stories on Dialogue, including A Beginners Guide to Dialogue, which can be found on the Workforce Scotland Vimeo channel.

Book Group
 
We are starting up a Book Group, for those interested in reading about supporting transformational change,  including topics such as Dialogue theory, leadership and organisational structures.

Book Group members can meet in person, or join in discussions online. Our first book is Frederic Laloux’ Reinventing Organisations, and the group has had a first meeting on 18 June 2015, which you can read about on the Workforce Scotland Blog.
