Workforce Scotland Events - Winter - Spring 2016
Fire Starter Festival 25 - 29 January 2016

'We cannot wait for great visions from great people, for they are in short supply. It is up to us to light our own small fires in the darkness'

The Fire Starter Festival is a week of engaging taster sessions, workshops and networking events that illuminate how we can transform ourselves, our organisations and the wider system, producing better outcomes for Scotland’s citizens.

The Fire Starter Festival is hosted by Ingage, supported by Workforce Scotland, and is open to anyone interested in creating better public services for Scotland.
The Fire Starter Festival is all about people from across public services all sharing innovative and creative ways that we are all making a difference to Scotland.

To ignite the festival, we have organised a series of events, The Fires, to take place  over the course of the week, designed to allow attendees to catch the sparks and create their own small fires of change.

These events are open to anyone in the public and third sector who is interested in learning about and sharing experiences around innovation, creativity and transformation.
For more information on the events of the Fire Starters Festival, including venues, times and registration details, please visit http://workforcescotland.com/fire-starter-festival/

Attending one of these sessions is not the only way to get involved in the Fire Starters Festival. There are hundreds of examples of creative and innovative work happening all across Scotland, and we hope that you will join our festival and create your own event to share work that you and your colleagues are doing. If you are interested in hosting your own, local event, please tell us your plans here and we will advertise it in our programme and on our website.
The Fires
Monday 25th January - Performance Bonfire

We often say that if we want to truly understand outcomes for people, we need to bring the numbers and data together with their stories – but are any of us managing to do this? This session will look into new ways of demonstrating performance in an outcomes world using appreciative inquiry techniques to look at the experience of participants, helping us to glimpse a different “outcomes performance” future, and igniting participants first steps towards it.

Tuesday 26th January - Dangerous Café

Do you have any ‘dangerous ideas’ around what do you think would really make a difference to Scottish Government? As part of the Fire Starters Festival, we are hosting an open networking event for all those interested in igniting change. Participants will be given a chance to ‘burn’ things that they want to leave behind, and spark ideas for the future of Scottish Government with one another. Each drop in session will run for one hour, and will be available to Scottish Government staff all afternoon.

Wednesday 27th January - Beyond U.Lab

U.lab has sparked off a creative and inspiring journey for many change makers in Scotland. Here we offer a day of exploration and discovery around the U.lab experience and consider what next? The day will involve:
  • Sharing Scotland's learning journeys that have emerged from U.lab
  • Opportunities to share prototyping from sparks to wildfire, and tap into a range of expertise from the U.Lab community and beyond.
  • Consider what next? What else is emerging beyond U.lab?

Thursday 28th January - Igniting Inquiry: the (hidden) power of storytelling

Stories play a big part in how we make sense of our lives, our organisations, our world. They carry and shape our values; can limit or transform organisational cultures; and often shape political agendas. Yet many of us tend not to look that closely at the stories we tell, rehearse, ignore, or develop as acts of leadership. In this workshop we will look at different theory and practice to discover how storytelling can be a transformative practice for anyone involved in public services – no matter how senior or in what organisation.

Friday 29th January - Fire Starter Tools from Workforce Scotland

What tools and techniques would help you ignite change in your organisation? Workforce Scotland is offering a day packed with a range of taster sessions focussing on supporting you to get your fires started. We will be offering short sessions on:
