We Gather
"Processional in C Minor", Michael Canales Jonas Dawson
Opening Reading: "I acknowledge my transgressions."
To sin is mortal. Only God is perfect. Our greatest weakness is our failure to
recognize our spiritual limitations and the inevitableness of sin. Our most
common sin is the smug self-satisfaction that we are not as other people. The
self-righteous are farther from the Kingdom of God than the penitent sinner. Those who pray loud and long might not be heard while the sobbing, whispered prayer may open the Fount of Grace. Honest, searching, examination of our faith, of our religious practices, of our sincerity, and of our soul satisfying experiences is necessary at times to discover and to acknowledge our sins of omission and our sins of commission. Most often it is the habitual sin from failure to lead a full,
vibrant, productive religious life which we do not discover and which if we did
discover we would not acknowledge before God.

*Call to Worship (responsively)
L: Rend your hearts and not your clothing.
P: Return to the Lord, your God.
L: For God is gracious and merciful, God is slow to anger.
P: God is abounding in steadfast love, and relents from punishing.
L: Come let us draw near to God!
Opening Hymn Lord, Who throughout These Forty Days
NCH # 211 (vs. 1 & 4)
Words of Exhortation

We beseech you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. For your sake God made to be sin. The One who knew no sin, so that in this very one we might become the righteousness of God. For God says, "At the acceptable time I have listened to you and helped you on the day of salvation." Now is the acceptable time. Now is the day of salvation.

Setting the Context
Hebrew Scripture Lesson: Joel 2:1-2,12-17a
Psalm of Confession – Psalm 51
Reader 1: Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; you who have great mercy, forgive what I have done.
Reader 2: Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin!
Reader 1: For I know what I have done wrong; my sins are ever before me and heavy on my heart.
Reader 2 Against you, God, you only, have I sinned; you who know all things know what I have done. You have every right to judge me for my
actions and every right to punish me for them.
People: Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit
within me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation and uphold me with a willing spirit.

Reader 1: In the time since I was born, I have committed many sins, and done many things which I wish I had not done.
Reader 2: God, you want me to be truthful to my very core; therefore, teach me wisdom in the depths of my heart.
Reader 1: If you will do it, O God, I shall be clean, wash me, and I shall be pure.
Reader 2: Fill me with joy and gladness!
People: Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit
within me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation and uphold me with a willing spirit.

Reader 1: Then I will lead others to return to you, O God, and learn your ways.
Reader 2: Deliver me from my guilt, O God of my salvation, and I will sing aloud of your deliverance. I will sing your praises.
Reader 1: You take no delight in sacrifices; you would not be pleased if I were to offer one to you.
Reader 2: The sacrifice acceptable to you is a broken spirit; a contrite heart, O God, you will not reject.
People: Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit
within me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation and uphold me with a willing spirit.

We Respond
Blessing of the Ashes
May these ashes be to us, O God, an acknowledgment of our wrongdoing and our acceptance of your forgiveness. In these ashes are our prejudices, our impatience, the times we have turned our backs on the suffering of others, our neglect of the environment, our indifference, our materialism, our greed, our hypocrisy, our envy, all of our sins. In these ashes of repentance are the seeds of our forgiveness and our transformation. For God always accepts us and forgives us. Through our repentance and forgiveness comes transformation. May God create within each of us a clean heart and a new and right spirit.

Closing Prayer

Hymn Just As I Am Without One Plea NCH # 207
(vs 1 & 4)
1 Just as I am, without one plea,
but that thy blood was shed for me,
and that thou bidd'st me come to thee,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.
4 Just as I am, thou wilt receive,
wilt welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve;
because thy promise I believe,
O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

2/12/2021  --  MESSAGE FROM Missy Moxley
New Book title:  The Book of Two Ways by Jodi Picoult.Read through chapter 4 for Wednesday, 2/17 via Zoom at 7p.

Book Title:  the book of two ways
Author:  Jodi Picoult

Everything changes in a single moment for Dawn Edelstein. She’s on a plane when the flight attendant makes an announcement: Prepare for a crash landing. She braces herself as thoughts flash through her mind. The shocking thing is, the thoughts are not of her husband but of a man she last saw fifteen years ago: Wyatt Armstrong.

As the story unfolds, Dawn’s two possible futures unspool side by side, as do the secrets and doubts long buried with them. Dawn must confront the questions she’s never truly asked: What does a life well lived look like? When we leave this earth, what do we leave behind? Do we make choices . . . or do our choices make us? And who would you be if you hadn’t turned out to be the person you are right now?

Join us if you’d like to socialize, stretch your mind,
or just leave the daily grind of life behind for a bit.

Reading and Contemplation

Living Psalm 139 – Epiphany 2 – Year B

Living Psalms Book

Psalms in the form of words and art, reborn in the specific contexts of our world, privileging the voices of historically marginalized communities and those acting in solidarity with them.

Living Psalm 139–Epiphany 2 B

It’s something, isn’t it,
to imagine being known
so thoroughly
that the pain you hold
is understood without you
having to say a single word,
without you having to testify
about your decision from last year
or ten years ago or yesterday,
when you said the thing that led
to the other thing that brought you
so low you thought you’d never be known
for more than the pain that crystallized
around your hopes and your heart?

It’s something, isn’t it,
to believe in One
who isn’t afraid of your broken parts
or ugly deeds or the cowardice
or the fear or the anger or the
hundred other ways you have tried
to make yourself disappear
when you felt unworthy
of a great and abiding love
and had persuaded yourself
that forgiveness was beyond reach
and grace, an undeserved gift?

It’s something, isn’t it,
to be loved by God,
to be both fearfully
and wonderfully made
just as you are –
not happier, not a work in progress,
or with fewer secrets or scars –
but just you, as you are,
welcome at the table?
Living Psalm  139 for  Epiphany  2 B was written by Maria Mankin.

Dear Congregation,
At the risk of being indelicate, I’m going to talk money.  Last year we did significant work at closing the budget gap. PLEASE remember your giving to the church during this time!  While we are not legally or safely allowed to be together during this time, the bills are still needing to be paid.  And the crashing markets of recent are going to hit our endowments very hard as well.  I’m just being honest.  PLEASE try to be a faithful to your tithe as you can be.  There will be a letter mailed to every home with a stamped envelope to help make your tithe easier!  You can also use the GIVING tab on our church website at and give via VANCO Giving Plus or PayPal.  ~  Pastor Rob+
