Are mentally ill people violent?

Fact 1:  Although some studies link mental illnesses and violence, the ratio of serious mental illnesses to overall rates of violence is extremely small.
  (Institute of Medicine 2006)

Fact 2. People with psychiatric disabilities are 2 1/2 times more likely to be victims than perpetrators of violent crime.  (Appleby, et al., 2001).

Fact 3. Inaccurate beliefs about mental illness and violence lead to widespread stigma and discrimination... deters the public from seeking help...and causes shame and embarrassment. (New Freedom Commission, 2003)

What can we do with our fear and sorrow?

It is easy to  become severely paralyzed in our responses... hiding from discussion and action because we feel overwhelmed with the problems.

Feel the sadness, grief and fear deeply---until there is only love and hope left.
