Harvest Festival  An Event That Couldn't Beat

It blew! We danced...we pressed cider!
Amazing volunteers, Deborah DeWit and Carl Vandervoort, serve up cider for festivalgoers while it's all hands on the cider press behind them.

Thanks to the 370 (!!) festivalgoers who weathered some rain to support Alder Creek Farm, local farmers, artisans, community groups, and the Harvest Festival's spirit of community and gratitude for the land. And because of you—your support and countless hours volunteering—the Farm is a place of learning about ecology, restoring land, protecting wildlife, and growing food. Thank you!

Dontcha know the Harvest Festival is fueled by Gary Seelig & Vivi Tallman? Vivi is an LNCT founder and former board member, and Gary is a former LNCT board member. They inspire this event, infuse it with love, and proudly bring it to you. Thank you, Vivi & Gary!

And a BIG thank you to Harvest Festival volunteers, vendors, and community organizations. It takes a village to mount a festival! You are utterly amazing.

Odonates at the Farm ~ Peek at the Magic

On September 25, Jim Johnson visited Alder Creek Farm and observed 15 species of odonates still flying near the pond. "Although not surprising," admits Jim, "it was a nice assortment of species (including a couple of non-odonate bugs) for late September." What's an odonate, you ask? Why it's a dragonfly or damselfly, of course!

Local Writer & Filmmaker Focuses on Ocean Conservation

Stephen Grace invites you into another world: Cape Falcon Marine Reserve. With his new Tides and Trails website, which is still in beta phase, he welcomes your feedback. Roughly half the photos on the site were taken in the Cape Falcon Marine Reserve. Lower Nehalem Community Trust is the proud fiscal sponsor of the Friends of Cape Falcon Marine Reserve.

Grace writes with a lyrical power, celebrating the healing power of the human spirit set free in the wilds.                                   —Los Angeles Times

Join The Nature Conservancy's Dick Vander Schaaf, Associate Director of the Coast and Marine Conservation Program, for a presentation on the Kilchis Estuary Restoration Project. TNC purchased this former dairy farm in 2010 on the lower Kilchis River to restore its tidal wetland habitats that once dominated the site. Dick's presentation will step through the planning and restoration process and discuss future work at the site.

Joining Vander Schaaf will be Tillamook County Community Development Planner, Hilary Foote, who will give a short introduction to Senate Bill 1517. Sometimes called the Oregon Wetlands Bill, it designates Tillamook County as the site for a 10-year pilot project to create a land use review process where the restoration and agricultural communities of Tillamook County explore ways in which agricultural use of high value farmland can be preserved in coordination with wetlands restoration.
