"Tu Eres Mi Otro Yo" : Border Spirituality

"My indigenous ancestors, in their wisdom, teach us the meaning of this encounter of solidarity. They say: Tu eres mi otro yo – you are my other self. We are all intimately interrelated, interdependent, and essentially a sacred part of each other. Tu eres mi otroyo binds us so closely together so that, if I hurt you, I hurt myself. If I am part of your light shining, mine shines all the brighter." Msgr. Arturo J. Bañuelas

The Center for Migration Studies recently featured Msgr. Arturo J. Bañuelas, S.T.D as their 2019 Fr. Lydio F. Tomasi, C.S. Annual Lecture on International Migration. The lecture was co-sponsored with the Jesuit School of Theology at Santa Clara University. Read or watch the lecture here.

The Insect Apocalypse

Thanks to Fr. Ray Sanchez CP, the chair of the Australia Province’s committee for Justice, Peace and the Integrity of Creation.  He's observing fewer grasshoppers but shows this is not just localized or limited.  Insects are disappearing globally at an alarming rate.

"So what can we do? Well, there are ways we can all, on an individual level, help to save the often-invisible creatures that support our entire civilisation. The first thing we need to do is stop using so many chemicals. Of course there are bugs we don’t want, but the problem is that other useful insects get caught in the sprays, pesticides and fertilizers we use. There are many tips out there about ecological gardening that is healthier for us and better for the environment."

Do We Really Know about Catholic Social Teaching?

So maybe you have decided to learn more about the rich tradition and scholarship of Catholic Social Teaching (CST).  Where to start (or refresh)?

CST 101 is a collaborative 7-part video and discussion guide series presented by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and Catholic Relief Services on Catholic social teaching. The videos bring the themes of Catholic social teaching to life and inspire us to put our faith into action. Some suggested uses of the videos and discussion guides include adult faith formation settings, high school theology classes, in lay ministry formation and to prepare groups for service trips. The series also includes downloadable posters and handouts for adults and kids, in English and Spanish. The artwork featured in the videos and accompanying materials are courtesy of Br. Mickey McGrath, OSFS.

A New Look and Recommitment:
The Passionist Solidarity Network

You will notice a new look with this newsletter, starting with the masthead.  We are now proudly the Passionist Solidarity Network (PSN)!  More importantly we are recommitting ourselves even more strongly to the work before us.  Following important discussions with eastern and western Passionist provincials, we decided we wanted to show a new, more unified commitment to social justice with some rebranding reflects our renewed energy for this vital work of the Passionists.

You can see how our new logo directly places the PSN within the Passionist charism With the Crucified of Today. From doing this work together for Social Justice and Earth Care, we are Awakening the Compassion of Christ.  Solidarity is a bold and prophetic experience for all of us to seek.  It draws us ever closer to the margins and into the places where people are hurting and oppressed.  Our work is "with" as well as "for."

For the next year or longer, we will also be focusing much of our attention on the critical work of ecological justice and the intersections of Earth care and the cultural changes that must happen based on the powerfully written Laudato Si’ encyclical by Pope Francis.

We are excited about our work together moving forward!
Marie Dennis:  Living Gospel Nonviolence
Recordings are available of presentations made by Marie Dennis of Pax Christi International and Kevin Carroll of the Maryknoll Office for Global Concerns on the writings of Pope Francis on nonviolence and the work of the Catholic Nonviolence Initiative.

The purpose of the speaking event was to contemplate the question: How can we live nonviolently in a violent world? Pope Francis has said “The true strength of the Christian is the power of truth and love, which leads to the renunciation of all violence. Faith and violence are incompatible.”

Check out the recordings of the talk here.

Linking Justice and Peace in the Lectionary

JPIC homily resources are available from the Conference of Major Superiors of Men (CMSM) and other religious communities. The Passionist JPIC office collaborates with other community JPIC offices and we would love to see other homily resources coming from the Passionist charism. Contact the Passionist JPIC office if you would like to contribute.
