Dear Medievalist and CARMEN colleague,
It is with great pleasure that we announce that the CARMEN Annual Meeting will take place on 9-11 September 2016 at the Historical Institute at the University of Duisburg-Essen.
CARMEN looks forward to welcoming you to the meeting which will be held on the Essen campus, Universitätsstraße 12 (building S06, floor S00, room B29). The conference programme is now finalized.

Workshops for prospective or ongoing projects are open to all – the idea is to give information or to discuss possibilities, and attendants will be asked to contribute, possibly participate in further steps, as well as spread the word at home or, even better, help to make contacts with people who may not be present at Essen but would be interested in an international cooperation.

See the workshop summaries and decide which one to attend or alert other interested parties.

  • The CARA Award for Excellence in Teaching Medieval Studies recognizes Medieval Academy members who are outstanding teachers who have contributed to the profession by inspiring students at the undergraduate or graduate levels or by creating innovative and influential textbooks or other materials for teaching medieval subjects (deadline 15 November 2016).

4 Other Awards For Medievalists

1. Purdue University in Indiana has been awarded $750k from the Mellon Foundation.

The majority of the grant funds will support competitively selected research projects.

Applicant teams can recruit members from any institution, but lead principal investigators must be faculty in the Purdue College of Liberal Arts.  At least one research faculty from a STEM field as well as one member of the Libraries' faculty must be included on each team. Projects will be funded from January 1, 2017 through July 31, 2019.  The title of the project is "Breaking Through: Multidisciplinary Solutions to Global Grand Challenges."

The approach appears unique in having humanities and social sciences scholars in the lead, and with compulsory links made to partners in STEM disciplines and from the university press that is housed within the library.
