ASME Enters Into Agreement with Turkish Standards Organisation
ASME Enters Into Agreement with Turkish Standards Organization

Earlier this month, during its inaugural visit to ASME Headquarters in New York, a delegation from the Turkish Standards Institution (TSE), the national standards organization of Turkey, entered into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with ASME.

During the meeting at ASME’s New York office on Feb. 14, Sebahittin Korkmaz, president of TSE, and ASME Executive Director Thomas Loughlin signed the agreement, which is intended to expand ASME and ASME Standards & Certification’s impact in Turkey, including in the areas of standards and regulatory development. The MOU is also intended to further promote ASME Standards & Certification and related products and services including Conformity Assessment within Turkey, and explore potential opportunities for cooperation in training, conferences and workshops.

Papers Sought for Special Journal Issue on Microscale Mechanisms and Robots
Papers Sought for Special Journal Issue on Microscale Mechanisms and Robots

The ASME Journal of Mechanisms and Robotics is currently soliciting technical papers for a special issue that will focus on microscale mechanisms and robots. Papers for this special journal issue, which is expected to be published online this summer, should be submitted by April 10.

The idea of micro robots with capabilities similar to their insect counterparts has captivated the robotics and microsystems communities for more than 20 years. Survivors after an earthquake could be found faster if robotic bugs could target the efforts of first responders. Robotic surgery can be enhanced by injected robots or robotic systems at the end of a catheter. Ants and termites build impressive structures and micro robots could be used to manufacture large structures in a similar fashion.

Six ASME Nominees Named for the 2017 New Faces of Engineering Program
Six ASME Nominees Named for the 2017 New Faces of Engineering Program

DiscoverE has named six ASME members and student members as the Society’s finalists in the 2017 New Faces of Engineering program, which annually spotlights the important contributions early career engineers and engineering students are making to the profession and to society.

The nominees representing ASME and the other societies taking part in this year’s New Faces of Engineering program were announced on Feb. 21 as part of DiscoverE’s slate of Engineers Week activities. The final winners of each category will be announced in ASME News in April.

Three members of ASME — Monica Black, Cynthia Sung and Emily Worinkeng — are ASME’s nominees this year in the New Faces of Engineering-Professional category, which recognizes the accomplishments of practicing engineers up to the age of 30. ASME student members Meredith Burke, Kathryn DeAngelo and Zakai Olsen were named as the Society’s nominees in the New Faces-College Edition program, which highlights the achievements of third-, fourth- and fifth-year engineering students.

E-Fests to Feature Engineering and Entrepreneurial Innovators as Speakers
E-Fests to Feature Engineering and Entrepreneurial Innovators as Speakers

ASME’s three Engineering Festivals (E-Fests), to be held during the next two months at locations in India and the United States, will feature a roster of prominent engineers and entrepreneurs who will share their experiences, expertise and advice with the engineering students attending the events. Registration for the first festival, E-Fest Asia Pacific from March 3 to 5 in Jaipur, India, is still open, and students can still take advantage of early registration for the E-Fests in the United States and receive up to a $50 discount on each of the two events. The new E-Fests will combine learning opportunities revolving around design, advanced manufacturing and robotics with social activities and entertainment, such as networking sessions and concerts.

The first of the two U.S. events, E-Fest West, will take place from March 17 to 19 at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. E-Fest West will feature three exciting innovators from the maker and 3D printing fields — Dale Dougherty, Eva Hakansson and John B. Rogers, Jr. — as keynote presenters. Students who sign up for E-Fest West by March 16 can register for the discounted price of $125 — a savings of $25 on the regular price..

Certification 360 Workshops

ASME Certification 360 Workshops are an opportunity for the certification community to gain insight into the policies and procedures of the ASME Conformity Assessment Certification and Accreditation Programs. They are also a forum where high-profile topics related to design, fabrication, and stamping of code items are discussed.

At this workshop you’ll learn how to best prepare for the certification and renewal process. You’ll also gain insights into the value of ASME certification and on how to leverage your organization’s ASME certification in global markets. These workshops are complimentary for the certification community.

Want to bring a workshop to your area? Send us an email or go to our website for more information.
