Menstrual Hygiene Management in Emergencies
#MHDay2021
28 May
Dear colleagues,

28 May is Menstrual Hygiene Day and we need to step up action and investment in menstrual health and hygiene (MHH) now! Globally 80 million people are displaced by humanitarian crisis and even more people are in need of humanitarian assistance. Approximately 1 out of 4 of these people are women and girls of reproductive age, who need to manage their menstruation. Their challenges are exacerbated in humanitarian settings, especially concerning dignity, privacy, access to WASH services and materials, and safety. To ensures that women and adolescent girls can manage their monthly menstruation safely, hygienically in privacy and without shame, a holistic response to menstrual hygiene management (MHM) is needed. It ranges from providing MHM education and information, to creating access to materials and supplies as well as supportive facilities and waste management. It requires effective coordination across sectors, including WASH, Education, Protection including GBV and child protection, Health, Shelter and Camp Coordination and Management.

#ItsTimeForAction for menstrual hygiene management in emergencies !

This year’s global campaign around MH Day calls for more action and investments. Preparation are running at full stream. A crowd sourced campaign video, ready-to-use campaign materials in 7 languages and infographics are available on the MH Day webpage. Events and actions can be registered and browsed too, to connect with others.

MH Studio 2021
The global campaign coordinator WASH United is going to host Studio MH Day on June 3, on www.menstrualhygieneday.org  (exact times tbc). This year it focuses on the highlights which happened on MH Day and will include a dedicated session on MHM in Emergencies, organised in collaboration with the German WASH Network. Speakers are among Monica Ramos (GWC Coordinator), Adrian Dongus (UNFPA) and the Bärbel Kofler (tbc, Commissioner for Human Rigths Policy and Humanitarian Assistance of the Federal Government of Germany).

We encourage all of you to disseminate this as broadly as possible to your networks and on social media. We look to your participation in #MHDay 2021.
