Author Larry Smith Partners with Short North Arts District Galleries for the 2017 Short North Temporary Mural Series

SHORT NORTH ARTS DISTRICT, COLUMBUS, OH - For the fourth installation of the award-winning Short North Temporary Mural Series, the Short North Alliance and galleries in the Short North Arts District are collaborating with local author Larry Smith, best known for his critically acclaimed Six-Word Memoir® project and SMITH Magazine.

This series builds upon the 10x10x10 Mural Series (2012-13), Viewpoints: Murals by Young Professional Working Artists (2013-15), and the current BLANK SPACES Mural Series (2015-Present). The series grew from 10 murals in 2012 to 19 total murals in the most recent series.

The murals are installed on the exterior brick facades of buildings along High Street in the Short North Arts District. They consist of high resolution images of art works that are printed on vinyl and heat-adhered to buildings. The process results in a work of art that looks painted on the building.

“The Short North Temporary Mural Series has grown into one of the most visible and anticipated projects we undertake each year,” said Betsy Pandora, Executive Director of the Short North Alliance. “They enliven the street experience and allow visitors, residents, and all who enjoy our neighborhood to engage with art in unexpected ways.”

Larry Smith will collaborate with participating galleries to pair six-word stories about Columbus and the Short North Arts District with an individual artist who will then be commissioned to create an original artwork to be made into a mural.

“The Mural Project is a perfect manifestation for the power and possibilities for Six in the City: Columbus, offering anyone and everyone a chance to share a story on Columbus that could become the inspiration for public art,” said Larry Smith. “That these murals will be found in my own neighborhood makes the work even more meaningful on a personal level.”

Artists will be selected in the summer of 2016. Work will begin in the fall of 2016 and is expected to be completed in early 2017. The murals will be installed in the spring of 2017.

In 2014, the Short North Mural Series won the Best of Columbus Award for Best Public Art from Columbus alive!.
