Over $50,000 available to match gift card purchases to local businesses as aid to their reopening.

COLUMBUS, OH (MAY 6, 2020) -- On Tuesday, May 12, the Short North Alliance will be launching the Short North Arts District Local Business Gift Card Give Back program. Inspired by successful efforts led in both Cincinnati and Pittsburgh in similar Districts, the program is designed to support and inject over $150,000 in funds directly into our local business community by incentivizing the purchase of gift cards by the public at participating local Short North Arts District businesses.

Starting on Tuesday, May 12, the first day that many retail businesses will open their doors again to visitors, members of the public who purchase a gift card to a participating local Short North Arts District business through the Short North Alliance website will receive another gift card purchased by the Short North Alliance to a different local participating Short North Arts District businesses, valued at 50% of their original purchase. A minimum original gift card purchase of $20 is required to receive a matching gift card, matching gift cards will not exceed $100, and the Short North Alliance will match a maximum of 3 gift cards per person. Gift card incentives will continue through May 14 or until funds run out.

To make this happen, the Short North Alliance has procured over $50,000 in a pot of matching funds through donations from The Columbus Foundation, a growing roster of generous supporters listed below, and repurposed proceeds from the now postponed 2020 Short North Gala.

“The Short North Arts District is the art + soul of Columbus,” said Betsy Pandora, Executive Director, Short North Alliance. “Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Short North Arts District was home to over 350+ businesses, employing over 10,000 people. We estimate that over 5,000 workers have seen a change in employment status and over 100 businesses remained operational in some way during the COVID-19 crisis. 139 have plans to reopen at this time and they desperately need the support of our local community in order to bounce back. The Short North Arts District Local Business Gift Card Give Back helps kick start that support by rewarding the Columbus community with incentives for gift cards purchased at local Short North Arts District businesses on May 12-14.”

"As a small business owner who was thriving just a few short months ago, the COVID-19 crisis has had a sweeping impact on our lives," said Kate Stevens, Owner, Red Giraffe Designs. "I never would have imagined that after years of hard work building a small business in the Short North Arts District, that this would have happened. But not for the support of our amazing customers and community - I don't know where we would be. That's why we are so excited about the Short North Arts District Local Business Gift Card Give Back program. It not only allows for folks to continue to keep supporting local, small businesses like mine - but it rewards them for doing so."
