College of Education International Activities Showcase

Faculty, staff and students are invited to discuss ongoing programs, meet stakeholders and learn ways to get involved. 

COE International Advisory Council (IAC)

Currently being formed, the IAC will work with the International Studies Office to address the comprehensive internationalization needs of the college. To be subsumed under the FDRC committee and representative of each of the COE schools, this council will help ensure faculty involvement in the development and implementation of international activities. Dr. Ed Harris will serve as the liaison faculty between the FDRC and the IAC.

Vietnam Activities with Dong Nai University

1 Workshops in School Administration April 2015 

  • Provided in Vietnam by Drs. Lou Sabina and Katherine Curry

 Visit to Asian partner universities by Dr. John Romans and Vallory Vencill June 2015

  •  Including Dong Nai (Vietnam), Hanyang (South Korea), Sungshin Women's (SK), and Prince of Songkla (Thailand)
 
English Language Methodology Workshop July 2015
  • Provided at OSU to 19 DNU faculty by Drs. Jenn Sanders, Susan Parsons, Sheri Vasinda and Faryl Kander and students Ky Le, Abby Weyen, Kiara Sabina and Douglas Idlett 
Upcoming Higher Administration Workshop March 2016
  • Provided at OSU by Dr.  Steve Wanger 
China Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) and the College of Education are creating a Dual Degree in Curriculum Studies. Dr. Hongyu Wang is facilitating the degree development. 
Also, the COE is currently hosting four visiting scholars from SYSU.
Growth
This year the College of Education had the largest increase of students in faculty-led travel programs across OSU. Students traveled to Mexico, Belize, Italy, Greece, Turkey, India and Yellowstone.
Upcoming Travel Courses
Mexico Serving and learning at Colegio Maria del Rosario Dr. Elvira Sanatullova-Allison October 30-November 8, 2015
 COE students have been invited back for a week of teaching and learning in our K-12 partner school in Puebla, Mexico during  the Dia de los Muertos celebration. This credit bearing travel course helps future teachers develop cultural awareness and global competencies to support diverse student populations.

Faculty Spotlight

Malaysia Dr. Mary Jo Self

Dr. Mary Jo Self and two doctoral students, Kaizer Omar and Indrit Vucaj, presented their paper, Fifteen Years of Implementation of a Comprehensive Field-Based Teacher Induction Program for Beginning Career and Technical Teachers, at the International Vocational Education and Training Association Conference in August 2015. This  peer reviewed, prestigious research conference is considered to be the premier conference in the area of workforce and adult education in the international arena.  

Mongolia Dr. Julie Koch
Dr. Julie Koch recently returned from a Fulbright Specialist visit to Mongolia, where she spent five weeks working with the LGBT Centre in Ulaan Baatar. While there, Dr. Koch assisted in the development of a crisis helpline for the LGBT Centre. She trained helpline volunteers and wrote a volunteer manual with internal policies for handling crisis situations. Dr. Koch also provided training to educators, social workers, psychologists, doctors, and law enforcement personnel on best practices in working with the LGBT community. Dr. Koch continues to collaborate on research and training with the LGBT Centre, educators, and social workers in Mongolia. Cuba Dr.Denise Blum
Dr. Denni Blum was awarded an external grant from the Wenner-Gren Foundation for $17,000 to coordinate an Anthropology Workshop in Cuba that will bring leading Applied Anthropologists from Latin America and the United States to share research theories, methodologies and practices that lead to and create social justice in oppressed contexts. The workshop will take place November 30th-December 2, 2015. 
In addition, Dr. Blum has been invited to give a Study Abroad talk about Cuba along with a representative from OU at the NAFSA conference this Fall at OU.
Hall of Fame Dr. Cecil Dugger
Dr. Cecil Dugger, a retired COE faculty member, was inducted into the College of Education Hall of Fame in May 2015. He served as longtime ambassador to the Kingdom of Thailand and Jamaica to further develop their vocational and technical education systems and has continued as an international ambassador for the university since his retirement. In 2009, Thailand’s The King Mongkut’s University of Technology presented Dugger with the Outstanding International Academic Alliance Award in recognition of his work.
England Dr. Georgette Yetter
During her sabbatical, Dr. Yetter will work with Drs. Panos Vostanis and Michelle O'Reilly at the Institute for Children and Society at the University of Leicester. Over the past year there has been increasing migration across Europe, raising questions about the schooling and educational attainment of immigrant children and the children of immigrants. They will study psychoeducational issues pertaining to immigrant children.
India Drs. Sue Jacobs and Amy Bowersock
Dr. Jacobs led a travel course on Global Sustainability to India in May 2015 and was joined by Dr. Bowersock and six OSU students. Subsequently, both faculty have been asked to present at the International Conference on Work Stress and Health at St. Bede's College in Shimla, India in October 2015.
