Welcome to Keep Stanford Wrestling

If you’re receiving this email, you’re likely aware of Stanford’s recent decision to eliminate varsity status for wrestling after this upcoming season. We’re looking to build support within our community to reverse this decision and ensure a secure and permanent future for varsity wrestling at Stanford.

A New Look

We are shifting away from personal emails as we move toward formalizing a communication strategy to better support our mission. Moving forward, you can expect to receive critical updates through this platform. We hope this will make it easier for those looking to sign up to receive updates and also unsubscribe if you choose to do so. We imagine that our internal communication will continue to improve as we hand this over to the communication professionals within our group of alumni and supporters.

Organizing our Support

The last week has made it clear that we have an army of supporters, ready and waiting for marching orders. In order for our group to succeed, we will need to structure ourselves in a way that most efficiently utilizes the skill sets of those willing to help.

After last Wednesday's alumni zoom, it was evident that we needed to start smaller and then build up. On Thursday we formed an Advisory Board that went to work creating a strategy and framework to move forward. As we scale up, this initial group may give way to more qualified individuals as they emerge from within our broader group of alumni and supporters.

In developing our organizational structure, we created four dedicated committees, each with Advisory Board members serving as co-chairs, to focus on areas that will be critical to our success:

Strategy Committee:
This group will be tasked with developing the narrative around why the decision to remove wrestling as a varsity sport should be reversed. It will dissect the university's open letter points, formulate a general argument for keeping wrestling, identify key talking points, and develop and articulate a final proposed solution.

We look at this group as the executive team within the organization. In some way, all other committees will take direction from Strategy in carrying out their missions. This group will bring skill and expertise in organizing and leading large groups of people, and will also include researchers, data collectors and fact-finders. While we envision a fairly flat organization overall as we all work toward the same goal, this group will dictate our direction as necessary.

Finance Committee:
An essential component of our mission will be raising the funds necessary to fully endow all aspects of the varsity wrestling team. It has become clear that this is non-negotiable. We are looking for people who have experience in fundraising and development. They will be able to identify key donors and tailor the ask to their audience.

Accounting, legal, and corporate compliance experience will also be highly valued in this group. It will need to create a system for us to accept large dollar and small dollar donations and pledges from the ground up.

We anticipate that most if not all of our key donors will come from within the Stanford Wrestling community. If you have significant giving capability, now is the time to step up. If we don't answer the call now, there won't be a next time.

Influence Committee:
Members of this committee will be asked to utilize their networks to identify potential allies outside the immediate Stanford Wrestling community. Invaluable allies will possess significant political/financial/personal influence with key Stanford decision makers. Using those relationships, this group will be charged with determining the key drivers behind the initial decision and convincing the decision makers that it is worthwhile to find a better solution.

The most attractive candidates for this committee will have an extensive professional and personal network. They will also have strong organizational and communication skills--particularly verbal communication as we envision a great deal of the work will take place offline.  Charisma would be helpful, but the willingness to request that others stand with them for the cause will be critical.

Communications Committee:
This group will establish and maintain internal communication within our base of alumni and supporters as well as external communication to the general public via our website and social media channels. It will take talking points from Strategy and craft them into stories and social media campaigns to get our message in front of a larger audience. Volunteers with writing, graphic design, and video editing skills will be needed.

If you are able and willing to help with any of these four committees, please sign up!

Email / Letter Campaign

Many of you have asked about writing emails or letters to express your disapproval with the university's decision last week. While it's important to note that correspondence alone will not change the decision, a steady influx of communication allows those working behind the scenes to find more sympathetic ears if done appropriately.

We put together this Correspondence Guide to provide direction here. Please review it in its entirety before you start and note that maintaining a respectful tone is crucial at this juncture.
Sign Up to Help
Again, if you feel like you can help one of our four committees, please express your interest through our Volunteer Request Form. We hope there will be more qualified people willing to support these committees than we ultimately have the need for. Please do not hesitate to sign up, even if you feel like your experience is less relevant. It will help us to know who is interested in helping and in what areas.

With that said we are going to try to assemble the best people we have, as quickly as we can, so we can get to work meeting and working on next steps. Organizing our efforts in a manner that best utilizes each of our skill sets will be critical to our long term success. While the mission will likely take longer than a few weeks to complete, this next period will dictate our strength and staying power.

We will need high passion and low egos, but in working together with a consistent and disciplined approach we will gather the support and solutions necessary to reverse this decision. We will preserve this pathway to excellence for our current Cardinal wrestlers and the many more to come. Together we will KEEP STANFORD WRESTLING.
