One evening, in the early days of high definition, large-screen TVs, a pastor visited one of his church families. The family was glued to a program on their new expensive set. The pastor was concerned, not only that now was not a good time to quietly discuss spiritual matters, but he knew that this family was thousands of dollars behind in their tuition at the church school. The school finance committee had carried them along for a few years, going on their frequent promises to pay. A sad story. But Jesus died to set us free, including the blessing of carefulness in our personal finance. There is no feeling like freedom from debt. And achieving that is possible with God’s help.

A Second Chance
Ezequiel started smoking and drinking after getting married at age 20. From an evangelistic series by Pastor Richard Perez, his wife was baptized into the Adventist church but Ezequiel refused to get baptized. After 13 years, his lifestyle took a toll on his body and he ended up in the hospital with sever back pain. The hospital chaplain was Pastor Perez, who recognized him and greeted him by name. Pastor Perez told him this was the time he needed God and asked the nurses to worship with him on Sabbaths, which they did. The doctor talked privately with Ezequiel telling him that he had all the symptoms of AIDS. The doctor took one more test to be sure. In waiting for the results, Ezequiel prayed and asked God for another chance.
When the doctor returned, he had good news and bad. Good news – Ezequiel did not have AIDS. Bad news – the doctor didn’t know what he had. Ezequiel knew God had answered his prayer. Another test showed Ezequiel had pleural effusion, which was drained but did not make him feel better. A subsequent test showed a tumor and surgery was scheduled. Ezequiel prayed before the surgery telling God “If you let me live, I will get baptized and give my life to You.” Ezequiel lived and kept his word. When the church held another evangelistic series, Ezequiel attended and was baptized. Now he works as a custodian and serves as the head deacon at the church. Praise God for second chances! Ezequiel says he will serve God for the rest of his life.
