Praise in Giving: Texas Vision
Advance or retreat? No one likes to have to retreat. Even the phrase “We advanced to the rear.” does not fool anyone. But sometimes our fighting forces have to regroup, to concede defeat in a particular battle in order to finally win the war itself. Some years ago a local conference conceived the idea of “local conference advance” where, instead of continuously making appeals for all of these projects separately, they allocated a certain percentage of this offering to their various ministries. So once a month an offering is designated as “conference advance.” It is well that we periodically focus not on our immediate local church needs, but on the larger work of God. And so today we dedicate a special offering to “conference advance.”

Stranded at Adventist College
Aoki had never even met a Christian when his parents enrolled him in the Seventh-day Adventist Church’s sole college in Japan. He didn’t even know the college was a Christian institution when his parents paid upfront for 2 years of tuition. He just knew he wanted to learn English and Saniku Gakuin College had a good reputation. Aoki was surprised at the announcement for worship the first evening. Aoki had never seen a Bible and he listened awkwardly as the other students sang and opened their Bibles. Aoki was ready to go home after the worship but decided to wait it out since his parents had paid tuition for 2 years. He had no interest in spiritual things but the students and teachers were kind and explained Christianity to him. He enjoyed attending church and conversing with his new friends. He began dating an Adventist women. But he saw no reason to be baptized.
After graduation, he wanted to teach in the Adventist College but knew he needed to be a Christian and therefore needed to study the Bible. So he enrolled as a theology major. The chaplain asked him what his plans were for the future, if he wanted to become a Christian. “Maybe I will become a Christian someday but not now,” Aoki replied. The chaplain said he needed to not wait to be baptized since we do not know what the future holds. Aoki asked for more time to think. He called his girlfriend, who was teaching in another city, and asked when she could come to his baptism. She only had one free day over the next few months so Aoki made that his baptism day. Today Aoki is 42 years old and a leader of the Japan Union Conference. He says the secret to introducing Japanese young people to Christ is love – the same principle that attracted him to Christ at the Adventist college. And the same principle that attracts people anywhere to Christ.
