Leo’s Legacy
Bienvevu’s brother, Leo, drowned at the age of 12. Bienvevu was not a Christian when Leo died but Leo and his older brother, Rene, had been studying the Bible with a man from the Adventist church. Both brothers were planning to be baptized soon. The funeral was heartbreaking for Bienvevu but the one bright spot was the entire Adventist church coming out to help and support the family. Rene was baptized not long after Leo’s funeral and quietly lived his faith but Bienvevu slipped deeper into substance abuse and depression.
One evening Bienvevu and his friend Rachidy went to a club and got drunk. They were in an accident on the way home. Bienvevu doesn’t remember much about the experience except looking at the car and wondering how they survived. A few weeks later, while talking about the accident, Rachidy said “My grandfather says I’m alive because of you.” “Alive because of me?” Bienvevu asked incredulously. “How do you figure that? I almost killed you!” “My grandpa believes in spirits who have great powers,” Rachidy replied. “He thinks one of them didn’t want you to die.” They sat in silence for a while. Then Bienvevu went home and read his Bible for the first time, the words pouring light into his despair. He prayed “Lord, You saved my life. I want to give You my heart just like Leo did.”
He went to church the next Sabbath and asked for baptism. He was invited to the series of meetings that started the next day. Bienvevu attended the meeting every night and when they were finished, he announced to his family that he would be baptized the next Sabbath. They didn’t believe him but when he stood up on Sabbath morning, he was surprised and happy to see his family there. “Rene knew you were telling the truth,” his Mom told him later. “He knew it was possible for you to become a Christian because he’s never stopped praying for you.”
While drinking, Bienvevu had made many bad choices including dropping out of school. Now he was unable to find a job since no one wanted to hire someone who had not finished their education. He prayed for a job and that evening one of the members offered him a job at his restaurant. Bienvevu worked hard and eventually had enough money to go back to school. After finishing school, he found a great job.
It seemed that, finally, everything was going great. His parents were taking Bible studies to join the Adventist church, and he was making good money. Then, suddenly, his father died, and Bienvevu discovered that in order to keep his job, he would have to do things God forbids.
To be continued.
