Praise in Giving: Local Church Budget
Mission trips. Participating in a mission trip is not only a blessing to the people we service in places far and near, but for us it becomes a life-changing experience. Consider the experience of newly-baptized Stephen. He was a factory worker with no experience in the ministry but wanted an adventure with God. He signed up for a mission trip to the Philippines. He and his wife handled the nightly family life talks. One day the local pastor took them to a prison and assigned each person a cell block to preach to! Stephen had never preached before but he swallowed hard, said a quick prayer and with Bible in hand preached to nearly thirty prisoners in that cell block. It wasn’t long after that that he began to prepare to be a minister himself back in the homeland. Whom God calls, He enables! God doesn’t just want our money, He wants our hearts!

Sorn Som An, an only child raised by a single mother on a farm in Cambodia, started attending church because he hoped to win over a girl. Every Sunday, he followed her to church. He was not interested in the good news, just interested in the girl. One Sunday, an Adventist gospel worker spoke to the congregation. The Adventist’s message intrigued the members and they invited him to speak again. After the third sermon, the church members unanimously agreed to become Adventist the members asked Som An to travel to Phnom Penh (Cambodia’s capital) to inform Adventist leaders of their decision. Everyone was baptized, even Som An, but he didn’t really believe in God. When he went to university to study, he asked church leaders for help and they gave him a small one room where he could stay rent-free.
During his second year of studies, Som An fell terribly ill. He thought, “Why don’t I try to pray and ask God for help?” On his third attempt, he finally managed to push himself to his knees. As he started to pray, he saw a spark of light and knew it was the power of God. He continued to pray. After prayer, he collapsed back into bed. At that moment, with his eyes closed, he saw an outstretched hand and arm appear above his feet. The fever left each part of his body as the light passed over his body. He exclaimed “Thank you, God, for Your power! Thank you, God, for Your Power!” Today, 20 years later, Som An is a theology teacher at a private university in Cambodia. He’s active in the local church and readily tells everyone about God’s power.
