The Case Against God
Life was tough in Victor’s homeland of Moldova, where he was a state prosecutor. So, he bought a Polish passport in the black market and moved to Ireland to start a new life. But he found that his Moldovan roommate, Alexander, was a Seventh-day Adventist. Alexander infuriated Victor with his constant reading of the Bible. Every time Victor asserted that a belief from the church of his childhood was correct, Alexander would open the Bible and point to a text that proved him wrong. Victor challenged Alexander to prove the Bible had not been changed in 2,000 years. Alexander found him 5 books on archaeology and history of the Bible. In reading these books, Victor realized the Bible had not been changed. But Alexander must be reading from a special Adventist Bible so Victor purchased his own Bible, looking to prove Alexander wrong.
Listing 100 questions to be answered, Victor started reading the Bible. As he read, he found answers to all his questions and realized that the church of his childhood was wrong. Victor decided to start obeying God. Alexander was surprised when Victor asked to go to church with him. Victor was baptized a year later. Even though his family was not happy, Victor kept abiding in Christ and walking with Him as the most important thing in his life.
Alexander started to nudge Victor about his black-market passport. Victor finally threw it away. Now if any police officer stopped him, he could deport him. He prayed “I don’t know if You want me to stay here, but send me back home if it is Your will.” He didn’t have a job but soon he was offered a job as a night security officer, and was given Sabbaths off. He also prayed that he wanted to pay taxes, to render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar’s. He went to the tax office to get his tax number. The couple ahead of him had trouble and Victor became more nervous. When his turn came, he slid his Moldovan passport under the glass window. The officer looked at the long line behind him and handed him some papers to fill out to get his tax number and gave his passport back without even looking at it. Victor received his tax number a week later and began to pay taxes. His friends couldn’t believe it. When he moved back to Moldova some years later, the Irish tax authorities even returned money he had overpaid in taxes. Today by God’s grace, Victor obeys the law of God and of man – and God has blessed him beyond measure.
