The Reformation. Last year about this time, much of the Christian world celebrated the 500th anniversary of Luther’s 95 theses, considered to be the event that triggered the Protestant Reformation. One of the issued that provoked the whole issue was over money. The pope wanted to raise money to build St. Peter’s Cathedral in Rome so he started fundraising by selling pieces of paper that declared the forgiveness of sin. Luther saw through the scheme and protested. You and I have a much higher motive for our tithes and offerings – love. It was love that brought Jesus to earth to die for our sins and it is love (or should be) that prompts us to be faithful stewards. Won’t you give generously today to help spread this gospel?

Experiment in Church
Pheara decided to test God at the age of 19. After hearing the pastor read the promise of Malachi 3:10, which says, “Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this, says the Lord Almighty, and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it”. So when the offering bucket came around, Pheara put in a 1,000 Cambodian riel banknote (about 25 U.S. cents). It was all the money he had in the world. The next day, his brother gave him 10,000 riel ($2.50). His brother sometimes gave him money for special occasions, but had never handed Pheara money for no reason. Pheara was stunned but still not ready to believe it was a gift from God. The next Sabbath, he decided to test God again. He put another 1,000 riel in the offering. After giving the money, he didn’t have enough money for gas that week but people kept giving him money so he always had enough for gas.
A few weeks later, the church organized a Christmas program and Pheara invited 15 friends. He had to provide the transportation so carried them 3 at a time on the back of him motorcycle. On one trip, he was stopped by the police since none of his passengers were wearing helmets as required by law. The police officer wanted to see the motorcycle ownership papers. Pheara called him brother but the documents had been lost long ago. Pheara remembered the Pastor had taught him to pray, so he prayed. Another police officer came along and after hearing the story, said “well, just give me 20,000 riel and you can be on your way.” All Pheara had was an old computer he had been trying to tell. He walked to a nearby pawnshop and received 40,000 for the computer. He was able to pay the police. This strengthened his faith. It was evidence to him that God exists.
