Poverty is a relative thing. Most of the “poor” of North American are far wealthier than the poor seen elsewhere. Some are victims of technology taking their job, some have lost work due to a recession, others due to poor money management and unhealthy lifestyles. You can see them at the grocery checkout, their carts loaded with beer and sodas, cigarettes, candy, and junk food. Jesus can help us avoid unhealthy lifestyles. Good stewardship of our homes and bodies will redound in personal prosperity as well as the prosperity of God’s work.

Surprises With God
Laura’s life has been filled with surprises in Mexico. When she was 10, the big party she thought she was going to turned out to be a small-group Bible study. She attended for a year and then started going to the Seventh-day Adventist church. When she asked for baptism, the church members gave excuses but in the end, she was baptized. When she finished high school, God provided the money for her to attend an Adventist university, where 4 years later she graduated debt free. She had promised God that she would be a high school Bible teacher if He provided the way for her to study at an Adventist university. But in order to accomplish that, she needed a master’s degree.
For her master’s degree, she did not have the money and she knew it would be hard to get a job so she prayed to God “I’ll go to the university where You give me a job.” Four days after graduating with her undergraduate degree, Laura received a letter from Adventist-owned Navojoa University advising they had a job for her and she could enroll anytime. She is now a graduate student at Navojoa University. Her advice to other students who don’t have money for an Adventist education is to trust God. “God is the owner of everything,” she said. “He will provide not only what you need but even more than that if you trust Him.”
