The bumblebee. It has been said that aerodynamically the bumblebee should not be able to fly at all, since his body is large and heavy and his wings so small. Nevertheless, not having read those dismal reports, the bumblebee goes ahead and flies anyway! For a denomination of our size, we should not be able to have such a powerful influence in the world as we do through our prominent universities. But we do, and it is a direct result of the faithfulness and dedication of our people in giving. We stand in awe at “what God hath wrought.” Let us then not only give to assist the educational work carried forward around us, but also strive to be shining lights wherever God has placed us, through consistency in tithes and offerings and in other forms of service to the cause of God.

Jesus Catches Fisherman
Kurihara’s heart filled with joy as he saw Sadayuki, a 48-year-old fisherman, get baptized on the remote Japanese island of Tsushima. After working as a fisherman since he was 15, he had just been caught by Jesus. The story is told by Kurihara: I first met Sadayuki when he asked me for a cigarette in a supermarket parking lot. My wife and I are Global Mission pioneers volunteering to establish a congregation in this unentered area. When Sadayuki tapped on my car window, asking for a cigarette, I immediately responded “I’m sorry. I do not have any cigarettes.” The stranger looked so sad and hopeless so as he walked away, my daughters and I prayed for him. I thought of giving him a tract but didn’t have any more left in the car. I prayed again and when I opened my eyes, I saw a lone tract lying on the car floor. It was tattered and having been stomped on but was legible.
We ran after the man to give him the tract. When I reached him, the Bible verse of Peter saying “Silver and gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you.” (Acts 3:6) popped into my head so I told the man “I’m sorry. I do not have a cigarette to give you, but I do have this.” The man read the tract right there. He said he had been heading to a nearby church to ask what hope is left in life but we came to him first. I invited the man to study the Bible with me every day. He studied with me for 3 months. He was baptized in 2015. He had struggled with depression and alcoholism and now dreams of opening an Alcoholics Anonymous program on the island. Sometimes my wife and I are tempted to get discouraged about the great difficulties of sharing the gospel but Sadayuki and his smiling face remind us that God’s ways are not our ways and He can direct us to people who are seeking.
