Yvonne Kunz awarded fellowship at NIAS
The Fellowship at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study (NIAS) invites KITLV researcher Yvonne Kunz, together with Eric Mijts as a fellow from Aruba and Sonny Mumbunan as a fellow from Indonesia to work on their project ‘Climate change and the governance of tropical marine conservation’ for a period of 5 months in 2022 and 2023.

Interview with Stacey Mac Donald
KITLV researcher Stacey Mac Donald defended her thesis 'Life in "paradise": A social psychological and anthropological study of nature conservation in the Caribbean Netherlands' on 17 May at Leiden University. Stacey conducted four years of research on the influence of social and political changes and the (post) colonial context on nature conservation in the Dutch Caribbean.

LeidenGlobal interviewed Fridus Steijlen, senior researcher at KITLV and professor ‘Moluccan Migration and Culture in a comparative perspective’ at the VU University, specialised in postcolonial migration from Indonesia, daily life in present day Indonesia, decolonisation of Indonesia and postcolonial commemorations.

KITLV jaarverslag 2021 online beschikbaar
Het jaar 2021 stond, helaas, onverminderd in het teken van de pandemie, die, zoals in het vorige jaarverslag al aangemerkt, binnen het KITLV diepe sporen trok. Werken op kantoor was slechts mondjesmaat mogelijk. Het organiseren van veldwerk was niet onmogelijk, maar wel een grote uitdaging.

Traces of Indonesia in Leiden

Leiden City World Walks | Traces of Indonesia in Leiden
These guided walking tours which will learn you more about Leiden and important footprints of the past. From 1900 onwards, more and more Indonesian students came to the Netherlands to study in Leiden. Several of these students also played a role in their country’s nationalist movement and the building of an independent Indonesia. This walk takes you to some important places in their lives and introduces a number of the students.


Podcast with Yogi Permana about his fieldwork
In the podcast with Nur Hidayat Sardini, KITLV researcher Yogi Permana talked about his ongoing research on the politics of flooding in Indonesian cities and KITLV’s new research agenda on climate governance. They also discussed the extent to which political science education in Indonesian universities copes with a wide array of environmental and disaster problems.

Colonialism, context and critical thinking
By Alison Fischer. Addressing institutional racism at universities must be a multi-layered process. Recruitment and admission of students, curriculum design, hiring of academic staff, retention, promotion and teaching practices should all be considered. But those of us teaching at Dutch law faculties do not have to wait for the slow process of institutional change. By incorporating critical approaches and existing historical research on race and colonialism, we can begin to address structural racism and colonial legacies as soon as the next teaching term. This article gives concrete examples of where and how to begin.

Algemene Ledenvergadering Vereniging KITLV
Het bestuur van de Vereniging KITLV nodigt u graag uit voor de Algemene Ledenvergadering (ALV) 2022. De ALV zal op vrijdag 10 juni a.s. plaatsvinden van 15.30 tot 17.00 uur in de Verenigingskamer (kamer 1.68) van het instituut KITLV, Reuvensplaats 2 te Leiden. De vergadering is tevens online bij te wonen via Zoom. Meer informatie.
Winnaars 12 subsidieronde Silvia de Groot Fonds
In de 12de subsidieronde van het Dr. Silvia de Groot Fonds werden de subsidieaanvragen van twee jonge Caribische onderzoekers gehonoreerd. Joandi Hartendorp kreeg een toekenning van € 2.500 voor de redactie en productie van haar proefschrift A critical assessment of slavery and holocaust education; Exploring social imaginaries to highlight multi-directionality. Miguel Keerveld ontving een toekenning van € 1.800 voor de productie van onderzoekspublicaties uit zijn project ‘Alakondre-fasi; Contextualizing inclusion based on plurality in multilingual and multicultural discourses'.
