Staat en slavernij: Een terreinverkenning van het Koninkrijk der Nederlanden
In juni 2022 zijn KITLV, NiNsee, IISG en de University of Curaçao begonnen aan een terreinverkenning naar het Nederlandse koloniale slavernijverleden en zijn doorwerkingen. Dit in opdracht van het ministerie van BZK naar aanleiding van de motie van Tweede Kamerlid Don Ceder. De terreinverkenning is een onafhankelijk nationaal onderzoek naar het slavernijverleden waarbij inzichtelijk gemaakt wordt ‘wat er heeft plaatsgevonden ten tijde van de slavernij, namens wie en hoe’. Cleveringa oratie ‘Moed en miskenning’ door Gert Oostindie
De Universiteit Leiden heeft Gert Oostindie, emeritus hoogleraar Koloniale en Postkoloniale Geschiedenis, op de Cleveringaleerstoel benoemd. Oostindie aanvaardde deze leeropdracht op 24 november met de Cleveringa-oratie: ‘Moed en miskenning’. In zijn Cleveringa-oratie ging Oostindie in op op de vraag waarom de koloniale overheersing heel lang bijna geen thema was in Leiden? Meer.
Gemeente Den Haag biedt excuses aan voor slavernijverleden
In verschillende media is aandacht besteed aan de presentatie van de resultaten van het onderzoek naar het koloniale en slavernijverleden van Den Haag. Op 20 november, werden de onderzoeksresultaten, die resulteerden in een boek, onder redactie van Esther Captain, Gert Oostindie, en Valika Smeulders, aangeboden aan burgemeester Jan van Zanen. Ons antikoloniale verleden verdient nu alle aandacht
KITLV onderzoeker Sander van der Horst schreef een opiniestuk in de Volkskrant over het antikoloniale verleden van Nederland. Kolonialisme en slavernijverleden staan hoog op de maatschappelijke agenda. Het onderwerp 'het antikoloniale verleden' blijft echter qua aandacht achter. In het Filosofisch Kwintet praat Clairy Polak met o.a. Gert Oostindie over "moderne" slavernij, de uitbuiting van miljoenen mensen die werken onder erbarmelijke omstandigheden tot ziekte of dood erop volgt en het WK-voetbal in Qatar. Usman Hamid, director of Amnesty International Indonesia, and Yogi Setya Permana, PhD candidate at KITLV and the author of a 2017 study into football fan groups and local politics in Malang, talked in this podcast about the national football tragedy in October in Kanjuruhan Stadium, Indonesia. It was the second deadliest in the history of football worldwide. More.

A compendium of four articles on what the Russia-Ukraine war means for the CARICOM bloc
Guest blog by Nand C. Bardouille. The Russia-Ukraine War marks a watershed for contemporary international politics, ushering in a multipolar international system. Great powers continue to exert influence over this transition. All the while, a bevy of other actors on the international stage are diplomatically positioning themselves to have their say in this era-defining geopolitical moment, whose effects are now (and for the foreseeable future will be) ubiquitous in international relations. In this regard, placing an emphasis on what it means for their countries and the regional integration grouping, the leadership and policymaking communities of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) bloc of small states have concerns about this moment. In October 2021, the 2nd edition of the Inward Outward symposium took place online. Initiated between the KITLV and Sound & Vision, and with special support from the RCMC, Inward Outward brought together archival practitioners, artists, academics, and researchers to explore the status of moving image and sound archives as they intertwine with questions of coloniality, identity and race, focusing specifically around the theme of Emotion in the Archive. Today, we’re proud to release the second Inward Outward publication: Emotion in the Archive: A Publication of the 2021 Inward Outward Symposium. Conceived as a way to further discussions that surfaced during the symposium, this digital publication collects different contributions from the speakers of Inward Outward. More.
Het koloniale en slavernijverleden van Hofstad Den Haag
In de zomer van 2021 heeft de gemeente Den Haag het KITLV, de opdracht gegeven een onderzoek te doen naar het koloniale en slavernijverleden van de stad, dat resulteerde in een boek. Het boek laat zien dat de koloniale geschiedenis en de dekolonisatie allerlei sporen hebben achtergelaten in de stad, in de cultuur en architectuur. Ook de huidige Haagse burgers komen aan het woord. Download the tour and walk the tour by yourself! There is an online guide available in English and Indonesian. The walking tour will learn you more about Leiden and important footprints of the past. From 1900 onwards, more and more Indonesian students came to the Netherlands to study in Leiden. Several of these students also played a role in their country’s nationalist movement and the building of an independent Indonesia. The walking tour was compiled by KITLV and the Faculty of Humanities – Leiden University, in collaboration with LeidenGlobal for Leiden2022. More.
