More importantly, the disinfection mist will reach and settle on difficult to reach surfaces which can harbour organism's moulds and other harmful organism's which could spread throughout the plant.

The Equipment Systems are available as portable devices or built in centralised automatic systems.

Fogging should never be used as a primary sanitising method but used in conjunction with other standard methods.

It is important to ensure coverage & saturation is sufficient for the mist to reach difficult areas so it can act.
Aerial disinfection can be carried out daily or even more frequently, and can be highly effective to:
  1. Reduce the risks from food hazards – food poisoning and foreign body contamination.
  2. Comply with local and international legislation.
  3. Meet specific customer requirements.
  4. Meet the requirements of global food safety standards  such as GFSI (Global Food Safety Initiative).
  5. Maintain positive audit and inspection outcomes.
  6. Allow maximum plant productivity.
  7. Present a hygienic visual image.
  8. Promote safe working conditions for staff, contractors and visitors.
  9. Maintain product shelf-life.
  10. Reduce and/or avoid pest infestation.

Why should we do it?
  1. To disinfect areas which are inaccessible to normal procedures, either by virtue of their position or proximity to electrical supply or similar.
  2. To help reduce any dust or biological loads in air which have been created, reducing the airborne challenges to the procedure.
  3. To reduce the airborne spread of pathogens and other micro-organisms.
It should be stressed that this is part of the complete programme and does not replace the normal disinfection in that programme.

In conclusion, cleaning and disinfection costs money. It is often perceived as a necessary evil which does not add value to a product directly. This cost and indeed the cost of not cleaning are seldom measured routinely by food companies.

The typical cost elements of a cleaning and disinfection programs include:
  1. Labor and supervision.
  2. Water supply, treatment and purchase.
  3. Energy production such as power, steam, air and similar inputs.
  4. Cleaning equipment.
  5. Chemicals.
  6. Corrosion.
  7. Monitoring.
  8. Effluent.
  9. Downtime.
  10. Any relevant overheads.
