As regular users of the Montclair Railroad Trail are well-aware, the winter rains have caused parts of the trail to be blocked. A collection of photos taken the morning of March 3 can be found here.

The worst blockage is about 100 yards in from the Bishops Court entrance (top photo). We advise trail users to avoid this area of rock slides and downed trees entirely. The hillside is unstable and the danger of additional sliding is especially high when it rains and for days after. 

The other dangerous slide area is in the Melin Cut between the Corporation Yard access point and the Snake Road access point (bottom photo). The hillside below two homes that are located above the trail has given way, and the trail is almost entirely blocked. More rain means sliding is likely to continue.  

What we know:

Although we’ve contacted the City of Oakland, at this time we have no specific information about how or when these areas will be cleared. We will be posting any updates we may receive on the trail’s Notice Board, located above the La Salle Avenue entrance.

We are aware of no major problems with the portions of the trail that can be entered from the steps on Mountain Blvd (School Trail), behind McCaulou’s, at the top of LaSalle Avenue, or at Snake Road. We hope you can continue to enjoy these parts of the trail. If you notice other dangerous conditions on the trail, please report them using See-Click-Fix or by calling Oakland Public Works at 510-615-5566. If it’s an emergency call 911.
