Foreign (Terrorist) Fighters with IS: A European Perspective
Research Paper | 23 December 2015
In this Research Paper, ICCT Research Fellow Dr. Alex P. Schmid analyses the widely diverging foreign (terrorist) fighter estimates. He argues, that stopping foreign fighters is not enough: The wider picture, including their motivation for joining the so-called "Islamic State" (IS), needs be taken into account and political solutions have to be sought.

Networking Event "Combining Efforts in Counter-Terrorism"
Event | 14 December 2015
ICCT hosted its first annual networking event, welcoming guests from the diplomatic corps, international organisations, governmental agencies and universities. Dr. Ben Salem, Director of the Tunisian Institute for Strategic Studies, provided a keynote speech on Tunisia's transition challenges and opportunities, including the importance of a rule of law based approach to counter-terrorism.

ICCT  Informs Council of Europe Report on Foreign Fighters

ICCT Research Fellow Dr. Christophe Paulussen contributed to a Council of Europe report on foreign fighters in Syria and Iraq with a detailed background study. The Council's report suggests avenues on how to step up an international response to the problem of foreign fighters.
