Bringing Waterford Events Closer to You

It is always exciting to share with alumni the great student-led events taking place at Waterford. This month we bring a series of events that took place in the month of July. Among these we had Kamhlaba Day, Visual Arts exhibition, Annual Careers Fair and Dick and Enid Eyeington 7 a-side tournament.
Kamhlaba Day
On Saturday 14th July, Waterford hosted the inaugural Kamhlaba Day, an arts, activities and food festival similar to what previously was called the Fete. The goal was to bring the Waterford community together to raise money for the school’s community service programme and, through preparing for the event, to help students develop planning, collaboration, and implementation skills. The school community, including alumni, parents, and friends, enjoyed the different food and art stalls that were erected on the school field. For many, the highlight was the music, featuring both student talent and well-known artists from around the country. Among the renowned Eswatini musicians who performed was Velemseni Ndzimandze (Eswatini, WK 05-10).

Dick & Enid Eyeington Soccer Tournament

The 10th Annual Dick and Enid Eyeington 7 a-side tournament on Saturday 21st July had a total of 24 teams, including five women’s teams. More alumni than ever before took part, and some had considerable success. Read more

Annual Careers Fair

The 11th Annual Careers Fair, held on 25th July at Mavuso Trade and Exhibition Centre in Manzini, was a huge success. Nearly ninety delegates participated, including the African Leadership University in Mauritius, University of Pretoria, University of Johannesburg from South Africa, and UNISWA, SCOT and Limkokwing from Eswatini. They were joined by employers representing a wide variety of professions, from music to medicine, finance to forestry, and design to diplomacy. Many Waterford alumni participated as representatives of their organisations. Read more

Permaculture Garden at Waterford

In line with its Green Policy and goal of being carbon neutral by 2020, Waterford has created a permaculture garden. Not only does this exciting project produce food that is consumed on campus, but it allows students to experience a circular economy: the food waste from the dining hall is fed into the bio-digester which in turn produces gas for the kitchen and fertilizer for the garden--keeping as much energy within the system as possible without increased external inputs. Tribute to Retiring GC Members

Waterford recently published a tribute to three Governing Council (GC) members who have retired after many years serving as school governors.

Alan Whiteside and Derek Blackman had their last GC meeting this month. Earlier in the year, another long-serving member Jeremy Lock retired. Read more about them and their historic connection to the school.

Phoenix Fund 2018

The Phoenix Fund 2018 was a major success. The target of E100,000 was exceeded.

The Phoenix Fund is a campaign in which Waterford’s Governing Council members, staff, students and current parents come together in a joint effort to further improve life on the campus, by realizing smaller, on campus projects, which are not covered by the school’s annual budget. Read more

Ekukhuleni Hostel Refurbishment Campaign

In the early days at Waterford, students helped to build the campus. Throughout the school's history, students helped to build many of the traditions, activities, and structures we have on campus today. As alumni, we are asking you to continue to help build the WK community by donating towards the refurbishment of one of WK’s oldest buildings, Ekukhuleni hostel. Click here to read more about the project.

We would like to recognize one alumnus who is doing just this. Jan Ledochowski (POL, WK 67-71) kindly made a generous donation towards the Ekukhuleni hostel refurbishment campaign after enjoying the 55th Anniversary Reunion at Robert Bosch College UWC. Thank you Jan, and thank you to the alumni who have already donated to this campaign. But we are still a long way off from reaching our goal. Please consider making your donation today.
