Club Captain's Corner
Izzy Boyd

Welcome back everyone! After a wee hiatus with the newsletter we are coming back strong and looking forward to getting these out more often to all our rabid followers.

The start to the season has been strong; with our men’s firsts getting some great score lines in their new found position in Ultra Capital Premier League. They have established their place solidly mid-table but are aiming for a few more good wins to continue bumping them up the ranks. Notably, beating top of the table contenders Upper Hutt 3 – 1 two weekends ago in a feisty game. Goals going to super strikers Joe Collicoat and new recruit Andrew Roskos, with the final being scored by 2018’s player’s player Patrick Waller. Women’s firsts have battled through their first 3 games in W-league so far with matches against the two top contenders for first place. However redemption was found in Kate Sheppard Cup winning their first match and getting ready for round 2.

As strong footy supporters we all aim for huge #goalz. We’ve seen a few great score lines this season with our Women’s 3rds (in Div 2) beating Wellington United 8 – 0 last weekend and Gossies winning 5 – 1 against Olympic and the following weekend beating Karori 5 – 0 in two mid-table clashes. Special mention to the Wanderers who faced Ben Sigmund’s team the Rampage last weekend and only lost 4 – 1. The Scarfies face them in 2 weeks time at Wakefield for those who want an autograph. A good team acknowledges their strengths as well as their shortcomings, so it is important to recognize the effort of the Unicycles in securing VUWAFC’s biggest scoreline so far this 2019 season with a  16 – 2 loss to Wests in Cap 7. Heads up boys.

Of note, this season has been strong for the Bombers having won every single game so far in Masters 5. Raiders are doing well and have established their place in Cap 6. With 21 teams entered in 16 different leagues we of course get some crossovers so the derby results have been coming thick and fast. Raiders showing their strength, beating Unicycles 6 – 2 in a heated match recently, Goldenrods beating Unilateral 3 – 0 in a bottom of the table scramble and the Thirds beating out both the Amigos 2 – 0 and the Accies 4 – 0 in Cap 3.

In the background, the committee have been doing some awesome work getting the bar license renewed and beginning to organise our social events calendar for 2019. Keep a lookout on our FB page for events coming soon! Also head on down to the Clubrooms this Saturday for a can’t miss deal: Fortune Favours Oregonians are 2 for $10!

Looking forward to our matches this weekend and you’ll find me at the Women’s first against Wellington United match on Saturday at Newtown Park (fun fact: it’s also zoo open day!). Good luck for this weekend teams!

VUWAFC 4 - 0 Brooklyn Northern United
(Nicky Ries x3, Nicole Baird)

Wakefield Park was the location for the first round of the Kate Sheppard Cup.

Going into the game, we had some squad changes with Nicky Ries making her first team debut, as well as Sam Gard jumping in goal as both regular keepers were out. Nevertheless, the team was optimistic and looking forward to the challenge.

The game started positively with Vic controlling the tempo of the game. Good ball speed and movement was causing problems for the Brooklyn defence and creating opportunities to break through. After knocking on the door for 13 minutes, the first goal came, with a cross finding the head of Nicky Ries to put Vic 1-0 ahead. Not long after, Nicky managed to find the net again, this time with a strike from her foot finding the bottom right hand corner, 2-0 to Vic with 24 minutes gone.

Having gone 2-0 down, the game started to even out a bit, with Brooklyn starting to find their feet. In the 44th minute, Vic were awarded a free-kick, which Nicole Baird hit and chipped the keeper to make it 3-0 going into the break.

The message from half-time was simple, keep a clean sheet and continue to play our football. Not long after the break, Nicky completed her hat-trick by smashing home a volley from a couple of metres out after a strike from Ella Reilly had been parried. A solid defence line, led by Annabelle Webster, ensured that the team kept a clean sheet and completed the 4-0 victory.

Player of the day went to Nicky Ries who on her debut for the first team, scored a magnificent hat-trick.

Men's 1sts leaping into the 2nd round of the Chatham Cup

Chatham Cup

By Patrick Waller

The men’s first team have been showing some promising form of late, coming off back to back wins against Island Bay and Upper Hutt in the league, and looked to continue this form in the Chatham Cup, having drawn Wellington United’s Central League side.

We started off the game unusually casual, while Wellington United showed some sharp attacking play from their front three, and within the first 10 minutes we found ourselves 1-0 down. Possibly just the wake up call we needed, as we started a high press. Striker Joe Collicoat would not stop harassing the Wellington United defence forcing multiple errors. Eventually the ball found debutante left wing Cailin Applegate who was able to slip in prolific goal scorer Alex Brodie, who evened the scoring with a hit too powerful for the United goal keeper. We soon started to take control of the game with the Freshie centre-back pairing of Will Hall and Flynn Everingham rattling the opposition attack with some well timed slide tackles. This allowed us to push on with the attack, and Collicoat found some space down the right wing, delivering a perfect ball into the box for Applegate, who casually controlled, and slid it under the keeper to get his debut goal.

Vic lead 2-1 at the half.

We started the second half strong, knowing we needed to kill off the game. With some tactical changes from head coach Tomas, we were able to maintain the same high energy, closing down their midfield and pressing on the counter. Substitute Scott Cameron won the ball back high up the field and a cross was quickly whipped into the box to find fellow substitute Trevor Everett, who was able to head home his first goal for the season after multiple poor offside efforts.

The game ended a 3-1 win, a good performance considering the Central League opposition. The boys hope to maintain the winning form in the league this week against Western Suburbs.
