The One Thing.

August Issue. From deep in the heart of Texas.

There are many things going on, these are a few of my favorite ones.
The One Map you can create.
I love maps. And especially those that showcase a city's soul, like these maps crowdsourced to capture the underlying cultures in their neighborhoods.
The One Project I love.
Designer Peter Novak has created beautiful posters about the transit vehicles from different cities in North America!
What a chaotic mixed of arbitrary design decisions they are.
The One Reminder: You are running out of time.
The One Formula to invest on Startups.
Jason Calacanis (@jason) has made 125 early-stage start-up investments and picked 6 “unicorns” (start-ups to exceed $1B in valuation) — one out of every 21.

He asks 4 simple questions to decide who to invest in:
  1. Why has this founder chosen this business?
  2. How committed is this founder?
  3. What are this founder’s chances of succeeding in this business—and in life?
  4. What does winning look like in terms of revenue and my return?
Bonus: Question 0: How do you know ____?

The One Degree and where to get it.
Surprises? At least for me: No presence of any Latin American country with doctorates and Psychology being so high (#4) in the list of degrees.
The One Secret to office happiness.
Care less!
The One Curious fact.

Maybe it is because I'm training for a marathon in December, but these caught my attention:

US Marathon finishers have been gotten slower for the last 16 years!!!

Researchers shared some possible causes for the slow down speed:

  • Adult obesity;
  • Teenage obesity;
  • Diabetes and Hypertension;
  • Average annual Medical expenditure;
The One Transparent country.
In Norway, tax information is open to the public. The tax lists only tell you people's net income, net assets and tax paid

And since 2014 it has been possible to find out who has been doing searches on your information.

There are some three million taxpayers in Norway, out of a total population of 5.2 million. The tax authority logged 16.5 million searches in the year before restrictions were put into place. Today there are around two million searches per year.

Could you imagine this happening in your country?

The One Job I didn't realize was so fascinating.
 Park Designer.

Look at everything that went into the design of the Piers in Brooklyn. Fascinating!
The One That made me think.
The One Advice Einstein gave to his son.
"I am very pleased that you find joy with the piano. This and carpentry are in my opinion for your age the best pursuits, better even than school. Because those are things which fit a young person such as you very well. Mainly play the things on the piano which please you, even if the teacher does not assign those. That is the way to learn the most, that when you are doing something with such enjoyment that you don't notice that the time passes. I am sometimes so wrapped up in my work that I forget about the noon meal. . . ."
The One NYC truth.
A brilliant series of cartoons about people in NYC's Central Park.
The One Course to take.
Symbolic Systems Program (SSP) at Stanford University focuses on computers and minds: artificial and natural systems that use symbols to communicate and to represent information.

Think of it as Philosophy for the XXI century.

Silicon Valley’s biggest names have graduated from the program—Peter Thiel, Yahoo’s Marissa Mayer, LinkedIn founder Reid Hoffman, Instagram founder Mike Krieger, among others.
