Matty shines with paid job

Matty Ollier, 27, loves going to work more than most people.

He has not missed a day since he pulled on his black and red uniform and arrived for his first shift at Toowoomba Toyota.

Landing his first paid job was no small feat for Matty who lives with Downs Syndrome but always wanted to earn his own money.

His disability support provider, YellowBridge QLD, wanted to help and introduced him to Brett Motton, Dealer Principal at Toowoomba Toyota.

“We have enjoyed working with YellowBridge QLD over a number of years and supporting their disability initiatives,” Mr Motton said.

“We have often spoken about the employment challenges facing people with a disability and what businesses can do to be more inclusive,” he said.

“We wanted to recruit a new team member in our car detailing workshop and decided it was a good opportunity to consider how we could make the role suitable for a person with a disability.

“Matty has been amazing from day one. He wears his uniform with pride, works hard, tries his best and has a terrific attitude.”

Matty joined the company’s car detailing team and has proudly chalked up six months on staff with exemplary attendance.

“He gets on with his work mates really well and I’m proud of how they have made him feel part of the team and help him to learn and develop his skills,” Mr Motton said.

“We have a high standard of work in our car detailing workshop and Matty has demonstrated he has the patience and attention-to-detail that is required.”

YellowBridge QLD’s General Manager Disability Support Jodie Collins said Matty’s experience had boosted his confidence and self-esteem and he loved going to work.

“The benefits of paid, meaningful employment are enormous for all people, including those with a disability,” Mrs Collins said.

“He is still our quiet and humble Matty but you know his heart is swelling with pride when he tells you about his job and what he’s learning,” she said.

“It is our hope that more employers follow Toowoomba Toyota’s lead and open their workplaces to people of different abilities wherever it is possible.”

“Everyone in society benefits when more people are engaged and included in the work force.”

Homeless youth

Every night in Toowoomba, about 130 young people are homeless.

Young people make up 25% of the total number of people who are homeless - a number that is just too many. Our youth housing facility, The Haven, can only accommodate up to eight people, so the issue can only be addressed properly by a shared and coordinated community-wide effort. YellowBridge is working with other community organisations to see what can be done to reduce the rate of youth homelessness. Our manager for Youth Services, Donita Bellette, spoke to Lee Faulkner on Triple M about the issue. Listen to the interview here

Biggest Morning Tea

Thank you to everyone who attended our annual Biggest Morning Tea to raise vital funds for cancer research.

Our guests raised $630 for the Queensland Cancer Council at the event, which we co-hosted with Emerge at their social enterprise Emerge Cafe. We are very grateful to St Mary's College who donated a lovely timber chair set with rugs and cushions for the major raffle.

What's cooking?

Madolyn and Peter from 7 News Toowoomba popped in to see what our Mates Place group was cooking.

Every fortnight the group cooks pizzas and then sells them to YellowBridge staff. We recently moved the cooking class in to the commercial kitchen at Emerge Cafe. The group is one of 25 activities that we offer through our disability support program. Read more here

Seniors movie

The next Seniors Morning Tea Screening is Wednesday 5 June at the Toowoomba Strand.

Come and enjoy Rocketman, the biographical musical film based on the life of musician Elton John. We provide a free morning tea from 10am before the movie starts at 10.30am. Tickets are $10 for senior members. Find out more here

CEO's Comment

Penny Hamilton, Chief Executive

Most older people in Australia want to remain in their own home for as long as they can and who could blame them. Fortunately, more people will have their wish granted because of government programs like Home Care Packages.

Why wouldn't we want to live at home for as long as possible? Home is where we are surrounded by the things that bring us comfort and joy – special photos reminiscent of happy times, our favourite arm chair, our own comfy bed, our nurtured garden and beloved pets.

We also want to be free to make our own choices and we know this freedom becomes harder as our reliance on other people grows. You might feel guilt and regret for leaning on your family more, and pretend that you don’t need their help because you’d rather not bother them. It’s a familiar story, but when you ignore changing needs, they get worse and before you know it, you’re considering moving into an aged care facility.

The good news is that the Australian Government‘s Home Care Package can give you back your freedom, allow you to stay in your own home and maintain your independence. You will have choice, control and dignity. Research overwhelmingly shows that high-quality Home Care is a better outcome for everyone involved. Services provided through a Home Care Package will help you to stay independent and live safely in your own home by bringing support and assistance to you. With a Package, you can take back control by choosing your own services and scheduling times that fit in with your day.

There are a huge number of services offered that may help you to feel safe and supported in your home. Anything from showering and dressing and getting your clothes ready to feeding or taking your dog for a walk or driving you to medical and social appointments – it’s your choice.

YellowBridge is proud to be part of assisting our seniors remain in their own homes and maintain their independence by offering a range of services. We can help you replace a light bulb, change a smoke alarm or install a sensor light. We can even mow your lawn and deliver your Home Care Package. One of our five core values is that We Place People First which means our clients are at the heart of everything we do. Your needs and wishes are our primary concern. We love that Home Care Packages allow us the flexibility to work with you to tailor your services so you can live life on your terms …. and we believe that is something worth celebrating!
