On March 31, sixty City Year Cleveland corps members spent the day serving at GALA cleaning, painting, prepping, and loving our school! IT TAKES A VILLAGE! We are so grateful for all of the community support in helping to get ready for our children this August.
City Year partners with public schools in 26 urban, high-poverty communities across the U.S. City Year corps members provide student, classroom and school-wide support, to help students stay in school and on track to graduate from high school, ready for college and career success. More photos here

Faces Around GALA
GALA is excited to welcome Emily Cherney to the team, as Family Support Liaison!
Ms. Cherney has served for the past two years with City Year Cleveland at John Adams High School where she worked alongside an ELA teacher to support at-risk ninth grade students and ran volunteer days and extracurricular activities and events.
Ms. Cherney also has advocacy experience as a canvasser for Ohio Citizen Action and completed research in the West Bank while she was in undergrad. She graduated from The College of Wooster with a Bachelor of Arts in Religious Studies and Communication Studies. Ms. Cherney is a lifelong resident of Northeastern Ohio and currently lives in Lakewood. Why are you excited to join the GALA Leadership Team?
I am excited to join the GALA Leadership Team because I get to continue working with kids and engaging parents and community members, which was my favorite part of being a City Year Corps Member. I believe the school model (IB and language immersion) will allow children to develop into critical thinking citizens of our world.
What do you do when you’re not working?
My favorite thing to do is enjoy a good movie or book, but I also love to create poetry, take photographs, and paint. I love traveling to new and old places and being outdoors. I enjoy running, hiking, and yoga, as well as spending quality time with my pets.
