GALA Art Club - Day of the Dead Parade
Students participating in GALA's after school Art Club have been working on creating mariachi band skeleton costumes for the upcoming Day of the Dead parade, presented by Artistas Latinos Unidos,

Art Club is a program of the MyCom youth development initiative, provided by Bellaire Puritas Development Corporation in partnership with Art House.  Students participating in the GALA Art Club will create projects through a series of themes: Day of the Dead (October 3 - 25), Mixed Media (November 7 - December 5), Chinese New Year (February 6 - March 13), and Ceramics (April 3 - May 8).

The parade, 3:30 p.m. - 4:15 p.m., is a part of the day long program: Día de los Muertos 2016, this Saturday, October 29, from 11 a.m. - 10 p.m. at the Cleveland Public Theatre, 6205 Detroit Avenue, Cleveland 44102. GALA families and friends are meeting at 3:00 p.m. at the Day of the Dead event to participate in the parade.

All are invited to join in the vibrant cultural celebration!  Fun for the whole family, the annual “Day of the Dead” honors the memory of those who have passed and is a treasured holiday in Mexico and throughout Central America. There will be Latin food, live entertainment, displays and activities throughout the day.

Cleveland Clinic - Healthy Hygiene Program
On October 14, GALA was fortunate to have Dr. Delvecchio from the Cleveland Clinic present the Healthy Hygiene Program to our students. This program aligned perfectly with GALA's current International Baccalaureate Unit of Inquiry: Who We Are, as students explore the Central Idea of Healthy Living.

Family Faces Around GALA
GALA is excited to introduce one of our families! Meet Katrice and Zora!

What grade/program are your children enrolled in?

My daughter, Folashade, is enrolled in kindergarten. She goes by her middle name, Zora. Her first name means "Crown of Wealth" in Yoruba, a language spoken in southwestern Nigeria.

Why are you excited about GALA?
I'm excited about GALA for a number of reasons including the size of the school, and the teachers' dedication to each student. However, what remains most important to me is the language immersion. As a former student at the United World College of the Atlantic in Wales, which also taught the International Baccalaureate curriculum, I was exposed to over 70 different nationalities and languages. I wanted to replicate this experience for Zora. Languages in the U.S. are taught far too late for children to fully understand and retain them.

By having my daughter start learning a language early, I was reassured she would be better equipped to move fluidly in the world and communicate with her international peers, which quite unfortunately, several generations of non-Spanish speaking Americans cannot do.

Tell us about yourself
Zora and I currently live in Lakewood, where we enjoy time with our close friends. When she's in school, I focus on protecting the civil liberties of Americans, especially individuals with disabilities or criminal convictions.

What is your favorite thing to do and/or favorite place to go in Cleveland?
Our favorite place to eat: Bomba Tacos & Rum

"In all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight." - Proverbs 3:6

Staff Faces Around GALA
GALA is excited to introduce Lauren Sammon, Art Teacher!

Why are you excited about teaching at GALA?
I am excited to serve as the art teacher at GALA because the IB PYP program fully supports social emotional development, self-exploration, critical problem solving and empowers students to have a unique voice and positive impact on society. These are the same principles that motivate me as an artist and as an art educator. I am looking forward to guiding students as they realize their own strengths and abilities through the transformation of materials and ideas.

Tell us about yourself
I hold a Bachelor of Fine Art in Sculpture from the Cleveland Institute of Art and have taught arts integration in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District for the past six years. I continue a professional art making practice exhibiting most recently at Rooms To Let: CLE and Heights Arts. I am most interested in creating and promoting art that reflects and comments on society and how we can have a positive impact through our actions.

What do you like to do when you are not working?
I love hiking and camping with my two rescued Pit Bulls Gypsy and Bansky. I also enjoy gardening, tending to my colony of honey bees and reading.

Share your favorite quote/proverb.
"I think art is the only political power, the only revolutionary power, the only evolutionary power, the only power to free humankind form all repression."  - Joseph Beuys
