News From Ideological Antiquity: Marx-Eisenstein-Captial
A film by Alexander Kluge

Mon. Nov 27, 7pm

Cable Car Cinema
204 South Main Street, Providence

Magic Lantern Cinema presents a film by Alexander Kluge. Presentation by Professor Gertrud Koch (Brown University) and Professor Nora Alter (Temple University). In its original form, Alexander Kluge's "News From Ideological Antiquity: Marx–Eisenstein–Capital" is a nine-hour long discursive epic intended for public broadcasting (a dizzying thought for the consumers of American television). The theatrical version, a mere 84 minutes, graciously condenses the immense excavation and exegesis of history initiated by Kluge into an experience more forgiving toward its all too human audience, without thereby downsizing the project's intellectual and political ambition.

Call for Entries | What's Your Privilege, RI?
Deadline: Mon. Dec 11
Hera Gallery, 10 High Street, Wakefield, RI
The South County, Rhode Island chapter of Showing Up for Racial Justice (SURJ) is hosting an intersectional and interactive art installation. Where’s Your Privilege, RI? will take place in a pop-up gallery at Hera Gallery in Wakefield, Rhode Island in late January 2018. This is an opportunity to highlight and celebrate the work of local artists of color, explore how privilege shapes an individual’s narrative, and communicate the ways in which collective privilege is tied to institutional oppression. The art exhibition will be interactive and work as a dialogue between artists and audience. Visitors will grapple with the layers that make up their own privilege and white people, in particular, may gain a greater understanding of white privilege. We are looking for artwork that explores the effects of race, identity, and intersectional privilege on the lives of Rhode Islanders. More information here.
