Carla Guttmann | Artist Talk

Artist and filmmaker Carla B. Guttmann is a native of Montréal, Canada. She graduated from Brown University (BA, Phi Beta Kappa) in 1993 and received her Master of Fine Arts in Media Design in 2010 from the Bauhaus University in Weimar, Germany. Since her graduation, she has exhibited her fine art in Montréal, Toronto, and soon Berlin, while also writing and directing the award winning films “The Double Woman,” a collaborative film “HEL,” and the documentary “Making Heart of Fire.” The latter was broadcast on German television in 2009 and 2011. Ms. Guttmann currently works from her Berlin funded atelier. Register for tickets here.

Showcasing the work of 20 exceptional artists from across New England, this curated exhibition opens in the Lower Gallery of the historic State House. The Rhode Island Peoples’ House is an unusual yet perfectly suited civic-minded site for the large-scale contemporary art project. Seen together, intrepid artists will show off their aesthetic leadership as cultivators of nature, stimulating and re-seeding our perceptions of life” in the urban through their imaging in art—particularly botanical nature’s fascinating guises.

Typesetting and Letterpress Workshop

In the spirit of Autumn, we will be hosting a fall-themed typesetting and printing workshop using printing presses at the Book Arts Studio, located in the basement of the John Hay Library. Please use the entrance located on the left side of the building (when facing it from the front). There are 3 slots (12:20-1:10, 1:10-1:50, 1:50-2:30) each is limited to 15 people. See you there! Passionate about research in the humanities? Come to our info session! If you will be a senior honors student in 2020–2021 and are pursuing work in the humanities or humanistic social sciences, you are eligible to apply for an undergraduate fellowship at the Cogut Institute. The session will include information about the Cogut Institute and the application process. Pizza Served.

There is a required lottery meeting that all VA Senior Concentrators must attend. Daniel Stupar will be overseeing your senior show lottery for your Senior Capstone Thesis Exhibition and we want to make sure that you are present to confirm and secure the date for your show next semester. This is an exciting final show for all of you, so be sure to meet with your advisor soon to complete the planning process. If you cannot attend, contact Daniel before 11/15 - you’ll need to send someone in your place.

Luscious: Paintings and drawing by Wendy Edwards | Opening Reception

Wendy Edwards’ paintings combine luscious colors and exuberant gestures in compositions that respond to the artist’s life and vary from landscapes and still lifes to pure abstraction. This forty-year retrospective includes works created since 1980, when Edwards joined Brown’s faculty. 5:30pm conversation with Wendy Edwards and Ruth Fine, 6:30-7:30pm reception.

Calling all creatives! SOMOS Latinx Literary Magazine is seeking submissions for its Fall 2019 issue! Accepting submissions of any medium in Spanish, Portuguese, and English, and you do not need to be Latinx to submit! Students are encouraged to direct your art and writing towards the theme of Bridging Borders and Boundaries, but welcome all submissions addressing Latinx identities and cultures! Check out our previous issues here

Call for Art | The Dean of the College
The Dean of the College Office seeks original student and staff artwork of all genres for display in the public corridors on the second floor of University Hall. We are looking for community work to help inspire students, staff, and visitors in the College space either permanently or rotating basis. Submissions of original artwork in all genres are welcome. Submissions may be made by students, staff or faculty members. More info
