Nominate the 2019-2020 Visual Art DUG Leaders
Deadline to nominate: Tues. Apr 16
The Department of Visual Art is looking to our student body to nominate two VA Concentrators to join Caitlin Takeda '20 as DUGs for the 2019-2020 academic year. VA DUGs are chosen each year to help students connect with one another, with faculty, and with alumni. VA DUGs participate in concentration fairs, give guided tours of our facilities to prospective students, organize the open studio events and assist with an annual juried student art exhibition. Look for an email from the department with a link to the nomination form.

'20 Honors Applications Deadline

Junior Visual Art Concentrators may choose to apply to the Honors Program for the 2019-2020 academic year. The details of the program are outlined on our website

Summer 2019 VISA Course Offerings
VISA0100 Studio Foundation - This course is a requirement for all VA and RISD courses that covers the basics of drawing, 2D, and 3D design, and cultivates the capacity for visual thinking.
VISA0130 3D Foundation - This foundation studio course introduces students to 3D form and structure, helping them develop spatial literacy and construction techniques by exploring the implications of commonly used materials such as cardboard, wood, metal, plaster, and found objects.
VISA0140 Photography Foundation - This course is a technical and conceptual introduction to photography, covering topics ranging from cameras, lenses, software, darkroom, scanning, lighting, and concepts such as selective focus, color temperature, and composition.

Studio Monitor Applications Now Open
Deadline: Mon. Apr 29, 4pm

The Department of Visual Art is looking for applications from qualified students to work in the labs/studios for the Fall 2019 semester. Areas include Book Arts, Darkroom, Digital Print Lab, Foundation Studio, Painting, and Printmaking. Please apply here.

Learn to make paper from plants in a two-day workshop lead by paper artist May Babcock: Free and open to the public. On the first day, participants will (optionally) gather plant materials, and then learn how to process plant material into pulp. On the second day, participants will learn to set up the pulp and pull paper. More info and register here.

The Department of the History of Art & Architecture presents a lecture by Niall Atkinson, Associate Professor of Art History at the University of Chicago. Atkinson researches the soundscapes of Renaissance Florence and the role of the acoustic environment in the meaning of built space and the construction of social communities. He will present his talk The Wandering Body and the Wondering Eye: Italian Views of Cairo in Early Modern Travel.

Canaries in the Saltmarsh | Lecture

A lecture by Chris Elphick, Principal Investigator, SHARP (Saltmarsh Habitation and Avian and Research Program) Associate Professor, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, University of Connecticut. With rising sea levels, tidal marshes and species such as the saltmarsh sparrow that depend on them, face many threats. This talk will describe the status of tidal marsh birds in the northeast, the ways that marshes are changing, and the role that humans play in protecting coastal ecosystems.

Students, please join us for a BBQ to celebrate newly declared and established VA Concentrators. During the BBQ, we are announcing the 2019-2020 VA DUGs. Following the BBQ is Open Studios - an event where students welcome the public into their studios for engaging conversations and a glimpse into the life of the student artist. Lastly, the DUGs are hosting a Paint the Stairwell event for junior/senior VA Concentrators - a long-standing tradition where students leave their mark on the List Art Building by adding to the murals in the north and south stairwells. BBQ  4 - 5pm   |  Open Studios  5 - 6pm   |  Paint the Stairwell  7 - 9pm
