What I Am Thinking About Now: Helina Metaferia, “(Middle) Passage for Dreams” screening and talk
Thurs. Mar 4, 12pm
Helina Metaferia will present her multi-channel video art project, (Middle) Passage for Dreams, which is currently presented as a
solo exhibition at New York University’s The Gallatin Galleries through April 7, 2021. The project features Black bodies at rest in benevolent landscapes while discussing assorted contemporary topics, including notions of empowerment, existentialism, and what it means to be Black in America at this time. The video and its installation reclaim Black bodies from the spectacle of death and trauma that are continuously circulating in our screen-dependant era. The work interrogates land marked by America’s violent history (i.e. Black bodies on the ground and police brutality, Black bodies against trees and lynching, Black bodies in water and the transatlantic slave trade, Black bodies on plantations). The project was filmed over a three year period at sites across the United States in all four seasons. Presented by Center for the Study of Race and Ethnicity in America (CSREA). Please register to attend.

VA Gives

Wendy V. Edwards Painting Fund

We are so thankful for the outpouring of support we received in honor of Wendy Edwards, Professor Emerita of Visual Art, who retired this past spring from Brown after forty years of dedicated service. A passionate supporter of arts education and an inspiring figure on College Hill, Professor Emerita Edwards is greatly missed.

To honor Professor Emerita Edwards’ legacy at Brown, the Department of Visual Art established the Wendy Edwards Painting Fund in November 2019, with a goal of raising $100,000. Due to the efforts of our loyal alumni and friends, we have raised $56,775 to date! Once the additional $43,225 is raised, the fund will provide support for the students of the Department of Visual Art in perpetuity as an endowed fund, in the name of Professor Emerita Edwards.

Please join us in making a gift in celebration of Professor Emerita Edwards and her time at Brown. This fund will serve as a lasting reminder of her commitment to her students and her craft.

To make a gift online, follow the
link here, check the box for “other” and fill in the designation field as “Wendy Edwards Painting Supply Current-Use Fund.” To make a gift by check or money order, follow these instructions, designating your gift on the memo line as “Wendy Edwards Painting Supply Current-Use Fund.”

If you have questions about making a gift, please contact
Jeffrey Cabral, Senior Director of Development for the Brown Arts Initiative.
Thank you for your support.
