Studio Monitor Hours & Building Access During Non-class Times
Begins Wed. Jan 27 for Hybrid Courses

Studio Monitor hours give students enrolled in VISA courses the opportunity to work in our studios outside of class time. The following studios will staff a monitor during after-hours work: Black + White Darkroom, Book Arts Studio, Painting Studio, and Sculpture Studio on Sunday-Wednesday from 6pm-11pm. A monitor will not be staffed for the Digital Print Lab/Lighting Studio, Printmaking Studio, and Foundations Studios for the Spring '21 semester. Students enrolled in hybrid courses, senior Honors students, and certain ISP students may use the labs and studios outside of Lab Monitor Hours anytime from 7am-11pm Monday-Friday. Everyone must leave the building no later than 11pm. Certain equipment and machinery will be off limits and locked down when there is not a lab monitor present.

Firelei Báez | Virtual Artist Talk
Wed. Feb 3, 5pm, register

Firelei Báez casts diasporic histories into an imaginative realm, re-working visual references drawn from the past to explore new possibilities for the future. With a goal to reclaim power, Báez overlays figuration, symbolic imagery, and abstract gesture onto large-scale reproductions of found maps and documents. She populates these historically-loaded representations of space with change-making creatures—whose hybrid forms incorporate folkloric and literary references, textile pattern, plantlife, and wide-ranging emblems of healing and resistance—to present fictional alternative universes. The artist will be in conversation with Leticia Alvarado, Associate Professor of Ethnic Studies and American Studies at Brown University.

Equipment Lending Library
Opens Mon. Feb 8 for Select Courses
The VA Lending Library (aka Equipment Checkout) will be closed for the Spring 2021 semester except for students in select courses. Honors, Black and White Photography (Ganz), and Other Lives of Time (Ross) will be able to check out designated equipment beginning February 8. Equipment loans to the general VISA student population will be closed until further notice. Equipment Checkout for essential courses will be held Mondays and Wednesdays from 4-6pm by appointment only.

Opportunities For Brown University Students

Nominate Alumni to Present at the Annual Alumni Panel Event
Every year, the Department of Visual Art invites VA alumni to take part in the Alumni Panel. The alumni are all at different stages of their careers; they talk about how their journeys as visual and performance artists, educators, and curators have changed since graduating from Brown. They’ll talk about the challenges and rewards of establishing a life and career in the arts, where they are with their work today, and what they’re planning for the future. We would like our student body to put names forward of who they would want to see participate in this event. The event will be held virtually. You may submit as many names as you would like. Please nominate Brown alumni

Exhibition Opportunity | VA Galleries

We have a few openings in the VA Student Galleries for weekly shows at the beginning of the Spring semester. Weekly gallery space is available from Feb 5 - Feb 25. If you are interested in having a solo, group, or curated exhibition in one of the three student galleries, please contact
Daniel Stupar for more information.

Funding | New Creative Artwork Grant
Deadline: Feb 10, apply via UFunds

The Department of Visual Art, Brown Arts Initiative, and David Winton Bell Gallery announce a new funding opportunity for all currently enrolled Brown University students: the Creative Artwork Grant. With the limitations resulting from COVID-19 social distancing guidelines, hosting an exhibition in 2021 proves to be an impossible task. The Department of Visual and our partners seek to shine a bit of light in these troubling times by encouraging the development of new artwork. In place of an exhibition this year, a jurying committee composed of Department of Visual Art Undergraduate Group leaders (DUGs) and BAI student representatives will award funding to support the creation of new works: the Creative Artwork Grant.

Funding | David Dornstein '85 Artist Grant
The David Dornstein ’85 Artist Grant is conceived to provide resources for exceptional and unique projects that serve as a “next step” for graduating seniors or graduate students. Any currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate student in their final year at Brown University. This grant is intended to support students that are not immediately enrolling in graduate school post-graduation. Grants of up to $25,000 will be awarded to eligible graduating students for projects that take place after graduation. More info
