Summer 2019 VISA Course Offerings
VISA0100 Studio Foundation - Instructor: Daniel Stupar. This course is a requirement for all VA and RISD courses that covers the basics of drawing, 2D, and 3D design, and cultivates the capacity for visual thinking.
VISA0130 3D Foundation - Instructor: Daniel Stupar. This foundation studio course introduces students to 3D form and structure, helping them develop spatial literacy and construction techniques by exploring the implications of commonly used materials such as cardboard, wood, metal, plaster, and found objects.
VISA0140 Photography Foundation - Instructor: Theresa Ganz. This course is a technical and conceptual introduction to photography, covering topics ranging from cameras, lenses, software, darkroom, scanning, lighting, and concepts such as selective focus, color temperature, and composition.

Open Studios | Call for Participation
Thurs. Apr 25, 5-6pm


We invite all currently enrolled VISA students to participate in Open Studios. This is a yearly event where we welcome the public into our studios and classrooms to showcase the artwork being made by students taking classes in the VA department. Each VISA class has a designated space in the List Art Building. Look for an email from the department for specific details regarding this event.

BBQ/Open Studios/Paint the Stairwell

Students, please join us for a BBQ to celebrate newly declared and established VA Concentrators. During the BBQ, we are announcing the 2019-2020 VA DUGs. Following the BBQ is Open Studios - an event where students welcome the public into their studios for engaging conversations and a glimpse into the life of the student artist. Lastly, the DUGs are hosting a Paint the Stairwell event for junior/senior VA Concentrators - a long-standing tradition where students leave their mark on the List Art Building by adding to the murals in the north and south stairwells. 
BBQ  4pm - 5pm (Brown University students only)
Open Studios  5pm - 6pm (Open to the public)
Paint the Stairwell  6pm - whenever (VA junior/seniors only)

Studio Monitor Applications Due

The Department of Visual Art is looking for applications from qualified students to work in the labs/studios for the Fall 2019 semester. Areas include Book Arts, Darkroom, Digital Print Lab, Foundation Studio, Painting, and Printmaking. Please apply here.

DIAP Student Committee Members Application Due

Our department will be continuing the work of Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP) in the 2019-2020 academic year. We are looking for students who are interested in working with Visual Art Faculty and Staff on our DIAP initiatives. This appointment would be a one-year commitment, and the committee meets at various times throughout the semester. Please self-nominate

The Sarah Doyle Center is hiring for undergraduate student staffers for the 2019-2020 academic year. The following positions are available: Sarah Doyle Center Program Coordinator, Special Projects Coordinator, Community Engagement Coordinator, Graphic Designer and Publicity Coordinator, Librarian/Archivist, Zine Librarian, and Gender, Health, and Wellness Coordinator.

Volunteer @ PVD Fest
June 6-9
The City of Providence invites you to be part of PVDFest 2019,  the City of Providence’s fifth annual vibrant and multicultural arts festival. Volunteer support is a critical part of the festival’s success. This year’s festival will take place from June 6-9, 2019, with most volunteers needed Friday-Sunday. Please visit

Summer Research Assistant (Arabic) 
Brown University, Judaic Studies
Research Assistant position for the fall 2019 course, UNIV 1001: "The Israeli-Palestinian Conflict: Contested Narratives." The Research Assistant will use the internet and a research library to locate and compile historical documents, works of literature, and essays on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in the original Arabic in which they were written. This information is then uploaded to a shared folder.  Job Requirements: Native fluency in spoken and written modern Arabic. Ability to work remotely and independently. Access to a computer, internet and a research library with inter-library loan capability. Proficiency of Google docs, adobe and google docs software. Start June 2nd. End July 20th. $12.00/hour.
