Other Events This Week

Rina Banerjee | In Conversation
Wed. Nov 28, 5:30pm
Granoff Center, Martinos Auditorium
154 Angell Street, Providence

Rina Banerjee is a multi-faceted artist whose practice includes painting, sculpture, works on paper and installation, all drawing on her science background. (She has a Bachelor’s degree in polymer engineering and worked as a research chemist before concentrating on art.) Born in Calcutta, India and raised in New York City, Banerjee discusses her use of natural and man-made materials – feathers, shells, fabric, plastic – and how her work examines identity, culture and tradition. The presentation is the fourth event in the 2018-19 Warren and Allison Kanders Lecture Series.

Until, Until, Until | Performance
Thurs. Nov 29 - Sat. Dec 1, 7pm
Granoff Center, Studio 1
154 Angell Street, Providence

The Brown Arts Initiative is proud to present Edgar Arceneaux’s first live work, Until, Until, Until...  The work investigates the infamous 1981 performance of Broadway legend Ben Vereen, televised nationally as part of Ronald Reagan’s inauguration celebration. Intended as an homage to vaudevillian Bert Williams – America’s first mainstream black entertainer – the final five minutes of the performance were censored for the television audience, causing Vereen’s biting commentary on the history of segregation and racist stereotypes in performance to be lost on viewers at home. Until, Until, Until… is based on the footage that never aired that night. This piece questions the truth of past narratives and creates an opportunity to reconsider our collective understanding of historic events. Reserve tickets here
