The results from the survey revealed opportunities for improvement and are shaping the foundation’s learning agenda for the coming year.

The International Seafood Sustainability Association was launched in 2009 by a group of scientists, leaders in the tuna industry and environmentalists concerned about the future of global tuna fisheries. The organization uses science, advocacy and partnerships to promote the long-term conservation of tuna stocks, reduce bycatch and ensure overall ecosystem health.

Landmark conservation achievement in Napa County
The Trust for Public Land and the Land Trust of Napa County have announced the acquisition of a vast, high-priority conservation easement. The acquisition – supported in part through the Moore Foundation’s Bay Area Program, effectively completes a 34-square mile conservation landscape.

New partnership and online tool will increase transparency and traceability and help meet zero-deforestation commitments
Through the Forests and Agricultural Markets Initiative, the Moore Foundation has been supporting World Resources Institute to improve transparency and enable measurement of financial institutions’ and companies’ progress toward deforestation-free commodity commitments. At the World Economic Forum, 20 of the largest commodity producers, traders, manufacturers, consultants and retailers launched a new partnership with research institutions and banks to monitor deforestation.

Creating the first specialty certification program for social workers in palliative care
Social work is an essential component of hospice and palliative care. Social workers help people cope, and often solve, problems they are dealing with in their everyday lives. As part of its efforts to support high-need patients, including those in the later phase of their life, the Moore Foundation is supporting the University of Louisville, in close partnership with the Social Work Hospice & Palliative Care Network, to create the first specialty certification program for social workers in this field.

Data from the world's largest digital sky survey released
After four years of scanning the sky 12 times (each through five filters), the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, Maryland, in conjunction with the University of Hawaii Institute for Astronomy in Honolulu, recently released data from the Panoramic Survey Telescope & Rapid Response System (Pan-STARRS) – the world’s largest digital sky survey. The data is comprised of three billion separate sources, including stars, galaxies, and various other objects, and contains two petabytes of data, which is equivalent to one billion selfies, or one hundred times the total content of Wikipedia. The foundation’s support helped make the data publicly available.
