Blessed Self,

Hari OM and Namaste!

THOUGHTS:

Meditation Tips - Be Light and Motionless - By Swami Chinmayananda!

First, learn to sit quietly, and not with a full stomach. A yogi only fills half of his stomach with food. One quarter is filled with water and one quarter remains empty. The sitting must not be done soon after a heavy meal. Meditation is always better when digestion and assimilation have been completed.

The accomplished meditator eats only once a day, or else eats very small quantities two or three times a day so that the body is fed, but there is no load on it, and it is always available for higher purposes. One should recognize that the purpose of eating is solely to maintain fitness and good heath.

In deep sleep the mind dissociates from the physical body and is completely relaxed. There is no awareness of the body. That is why as a preliminary step, the meditator is advised to learn the technique of sitting motionless and quiet. Since we have to transcend the mind that constantly functions through the body, the mind has to be reigned in away from the body.

The longer one sits without any motion, the more the body disappears from our awareness. As the body disappears from our consciousness we feel great peace and bliss.

But even though peace and joy may be experienced, it is a kind of dull quietude, not elevating or enriching. There is a quietness, no doubt, but a dry quietude of the scalding desert, not the magnificent quietude that one experiences in the grandeur of a forest.

The mind can develop enormous mental vitality, and because of its high degree of concentration can even develop mystical powers. With this quiet, concentrated mind one can gain much material success. But it does not have the divine potential to transmute our very existence and character.

This can happen only when we enter the inner kingdom of self-discovery. To convert the dry silence into something noble becomes the spiritual path. To learn the art of meditation, experienced masters advise a number of physical and mental adjustments.
